Why Is The Forum Now So Screwed Up & Slowwwww?

Can anybody PLEASE help..

Please can you tell me why the site is so slow now? I used to be able to log on directly - and very quickly - to the Slough Town Forum page.. now, it goes to a whole list of Forums (admittedly, the only club forum is Slough) and the slow nature of the process (every click means a one minute wait) is making it very frustrating to log in.

Could you advise how to change this, please?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I agree the forum is now MUCH slower!!! Even with a Cable modem it is unbelieveably slow!!! I hate to imagine what it must be like with dial up!!!! Maybe it's just a little too busy, too much going on with it do you think???

Would be interesting to know whats going on with it!

Not everyone is experiencing this problem - I'm using dial-up (56k modem) and getting average response times of about 2 seconds - which is about the same as I've always got since this forum started. I usually only logon in the evening though, so maybe the time of day is a factor ?????

If you are experiencing it being slow - can you tell me what times you are seeing right down the foot of the page. For example this page for me loaded in 0.146 seconds.

I am always seeing what I can do to speed things up - we are a LOT busier than a year ago - last month we had over 5 million hits to the site - and as we grow, I am looking to move the site to its own dedicated server - but all this costs money - and as the site is run from my own pocket, it might take a few weeks before I can do this.

I tried comparing how long it took for me to see the thread, with the time stated at the bottom. Took 5 seconds for the page to come up, but according to the page bottom was only 0.22 seconds.

A couple of weeks ago I thought the forum was extremely slow--often took 15-30 seconds to get a page, but has recently (for me anyway) improved a lot. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wavey.gif" alt="" />

I am tweaking things all the time - also problems can be at your ISP end (if you view from work, and a lot of people are on the net at once your connection could be worse than a dedicated 56k dial up), the internet generally, how your cache is set up, what browser you are using etc. Oh and also how busy the site / server is. Some days this month we have served over 300,000 hits - that is a lot of traffic (for us) - but something that I need to cope with.

If anyone has any particular problems it is worth telling me the following:-

1) Browser make & version - i.e Internet Explorer 5.5

2) Connection type - i.e. 56k modem, ADSL, T1

3) Time of problem

4) The page you were on

5) The generated time shown at the foot of the page

6) Anything lse you think is relevant

I am genuinly wishing to help, but really need to know specifics, so I can in search of a resoloution.

I will put a new 'clean' version of the software online in the next couple of weeks. This may speed things up - I will then slowly add back in the hacks.

I am also going to replace the navigation (again!) to see if I can speed anything up there.

If you have any suggestions, feel free to PM them to me.

This should be resolved by the weekend as a new revision of software is being implemented as we speak, so a slight speedup should be evident by then.

Admin is currently looking into how to speed things up, but don't forget, there is a lot of traffic on the site which also contributes to the slow down.
