AFC Hornchurch v West Ham Utd

A young West Ham side secured a 2-0 win in a pre-season friendly clash against non-league neighbours Hornchurch on Saturday afternoon.

In a closely-fought encounter at The Stadium in Bridge Avenue, Upminster, goals from under-18 trialist Max Gradel and midfielder Jack Collinson made it a perfect start to their preparations for Kevin Keen’s team.

On a scorching hot afternoon in Essex, 911 fans turned up to watch the action. Hornchurch, who recently dropped down from the Ryman League to the Essex Senior League after severe financial difficulties last season, put on a brave display and had much of the early play but Hammers’ greater fitness and organisation always kept them in control.

The opening goal arrived just eight minutes before the break as Gradel, a 27th minute substitute for striker Moses Ashikodi, latched on to a pass from fellow substitute Lee Hales and twisted and turned his way inside the penalty area before lashing home a left-foot strike from six yards out.

Gradel then returned to the bench at half-time as Ashikodi re-entered the fray, while the interval also saw highly-rated young defender James Tomkins take his place in the centre of defence for the second half.

Hammers grabbed their second on 69 minutes, as first-year Academy scholar Collinson — an impressive performer in the centre of midfield — collected possession on the edge of the area and cleverly jinked past an opponent before firing low into the bottom corner of the net.

The Hammers line-up contained just two players with first team experience — Australian defender Trent McClenahan and French striker Youssef Sofiane, while England youth stars Hogan Ephraim and Kyel Reid both impressed on the flanks.

they didn't like the close attention that we gave them which of course is a lower league tactic...

I'll tell you this though...that team from west ham and their managers and officials were amongst the nicest people we have had down at the stadium ....a real good day in my opinion......

Sorry mate I have to disagree, they played some good stuff as did we of course.

There side had been together for just over a week and sprayed the ball about very well with some nippy guys up front.

It was a good exercise for both clubs and one that all the officials at AFC HX and WHU thoroughly enjoyed as there is a nice bond between the two clubs.

They took their two chances and we didn't take our couple, but they were never Up and Over merchants.

top day, just found out that they had an aussie at the back, that must explain some of the wayward passes that went off the pitch, perhaps he thought if he hit it off he would get runs!!!

He should have a chicken phal from the alishan,he would pile on the runs,i did last night and must of hit a century this morning
