New offside rule

Great yet more clarification from the bods at Fifa. Could well lead to a lot more "goals" being disallowed very late. Which should be fun.

All of them probably.

I think last season lino were raising their flag on whether they thought the player was interferring or likely to. This season I can see them waiting until the player actually touches the ball before giving the decision. It is likley to make decisions fractions of a second later but I don't think that will improve the game for the viewing public.

I'm with Brian Clough on this one - if you are not trying to influence play, what the hell are you doing on the pitch?!

In the scenario they've pictured what happens if the player receiving the ball (player 1) is onside but he then passes to player 2 who is onside but was off when the original ball was played to player 1?

Christ knows - it is a daft rule and Cloughie as usual had it spot on. Go back to old law it was perfectly straight forward. I bet statistically that the introduction of the new rule has not led to more goals which was what it was supposed to be about.

The rule has being further 'refined' to allow referees and their assistants to influence results according to the wishes of the FIFA, the FA and TV companies. The offside rule used to be objective. Now it has just enough subjectivity to allow certain teams to be favoured or prejudiced by officials. Offside and onside no longer exists based on the physical positions of players, but relies on referees predicting what the players intentions may or may not be. Certain players are now going to be able to play and score frequent 'offside' goals. No wonder Michael Owen wants to come back to England.

I think player 2 would not have been deemed as offside when the ball was played to player 1 unless he was close enough to player 1 to be deemed as interfearing with play.

Who was it who benefitted from this last season whilst the laws were still being understood? I'm sure it was an international match against England where a centre forward stands upfront towards the area. Ball is knocked down the right wing to pacy winger into space. Defence then have to run their nuts off as winger paces in and cuts ball back to centre forward, unmarked, who taps the ball past the keeper.

Centre forward is not deemed to be interfering with play in the 'first motion' of play and is not offside when receiving the ball as he was behind the winger or the ball was cut back.
