1st XI v Enfield today........

Waltham Abbey 1 (0) v 1 (0) Enfield

Pre-Season Friendly

Saturday 16th July 2005

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In quite literally a "Game of two halves", The Abbotts entertained Southern League Div 1 (East) side Enfield at "Larscens Rec" - a ground which used to stage the Waltham Hospital Cup finals of yesteryear.

Despite the heat, there was no quarter given by either side and The Abbotts won a number of early free kicks as the Enfield defence struggled to cope with the lively John Sapsford and Luke Power. However, it was the E's who had the first real goal scoring opportunities with both Owen Beale and Danny Clarke coming close. On the half-hour, Kevin Cooper was put clean through but was denied by John Hickman. The Abbotts finished the half with a flourish but they were unable to break down a stubborn Enfield defence.

Enfield fielded a totally changed side for the second period and, during the last 15 minutes it showed as they began to dominate proceedings. Following some trickery in his own half, Greg Howell released Jeff Hammond who lost out to Hickman in a one-on-one. Minutes later a long range Howell free-kick had Hickman scampering to ensure that his goal remained intact. The Hickman / Hammond duel continued and, once again, the custodian had the upper hand.

In the 89th minute, Danny Alleyne was impeded in the area and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Hickman saved the kick from Howell but was powerless to prevent him from knocking home the rebound. With virtually the last kick of the game, Marc Sontag bundled home a corner to level the tie.

Squad : Hickman, Izycki, S.Underhill, Page, Forde, Power, White, Rutherford, M.Sontag, Sapsford, Connelly (Subs: Green, Williams, Lawrence, Brotherton, Timotheou)
