When Liam Daish was appointed manager it was announced that one of the reasons for giving him the job was that he had good contacts and would be able to bring in players that could do a good job for the club in the Conference.

From what has happened so far, certainly during this pre-season period, would indicate that the only contacts he has are with the clubs he used to manage. Whilst the players he has brought in from Welling United, and now the likleyhood of a goal keeper formally at Havant and Waterlooville, may be fair players and eventually do a good job for the Fleet, they hardly have the experience for what is required next season.

Don't say be patient either, if a player is any good and is/was available they have probably already been snapped up.

I think the players that he's brought in ARE good players its just a question that we all feel there's not been enough of them at this stage of the season. If we sign a Bowry and 4 other decent chaps in the next three weeks i guess we'll all feel more comfortable. The big question is IF though.

As I said, it will be too late by then.

The main reason for playing pre-season friendlies is to ensure that players gain match fitness, allow new players the opportunity to get used to the way their new colleagues play and also to get used to the manager's match plans etc. etc.

Bringing in players towards the end of the pre-season friendlies is too late because that inevitably means that for the the new players the first few league games become their pre-season friendlies, they lack match fitness and the games are the only opportunity for them to get to know their new team mates in a match situation.

That situation will almost inevitably lead to a poor start to the season, with everybody getting on everyones back from game 1.

Sounds familiar at Stonebridge Road though!

I like this thread. Lets randomly sign players just on recomendations from other people without seeing them play. Then they'll turn out to be crap and the club will get relegated with massive debts.

Hmmm.

Or we could watch the possible trialsts we have playing at Folkestone this saturday and make assumptions due to them.

Does everyone remember the start of the season a couple of years back when after losing the likes of Bentley, Jacko etc. we left it too late to bring in good quality replacements. Start of season was dire. Things only picked up when Andy re-shuffled the team and signed proper players than make-do's like Leroy Huggins <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />. Lets hope Liam gives our new players enough time to gel but make sure he's not rushed into signing players just for the sake of it ay?

White Van Nistelrooy does have a point about the start of the league season effectively becoming pre-season when the squad is hastily assembled at the end of the summer. But the very notion of a trialist is someone who plays in pre-season, and as Harry quite rightly says, we'll just have to wait. The trialist system is erratic, but can work wonders, as demonstrated by Perks in 2003/2004.

Additionally, as Stu points out in another thread, judging by Terry Brown's comments there may be more talented players coming the Conference's way when the league trials finish.
