The high street today

The council ooficers were in the hight street today promoting "be a part of the community"

spoke with some officers including Cheryl Coppell

she was of course playing the usal (well if the football club did not get so confrontational with Richard Stokes he might have been able to have helped us !!!) well that took the biscuit and the club was again the bad guy ! in this problem..

She said she would speak with Mr Stokes to see if a meeting could be arranged but we would have to be more non confrontational)

Really is there any point to have a meeting with him ?

Could members of this forum give me any answers of the best way to deal with this ? or should we bother..(because everytime in the past he has denied and turned things around in his statements and promises) As the Slough Observer have also found out...

I don't know when this meeting will be held nor a date but I would appreciate your ideas...

cheers chris sliski

WE should be less confrontational?? Well that's f*****g rich coming from the council. The same council who took great delight in announcing to the press that "WE WILL STOP ANY FOOTBALL STADIUM DEVELOPMENT ON BRITWELL" and even used it as part of the election strategy. Now if that's not confrontational I don't know what is.

The council do not believe they have any obligations towards Slough Town Football Club and until they realise that's actually not true, we're wasting our time. We should channel our efforts into ensuring this shower do not get re-elected next May.

That's how I felt..straight away..too..ian..my blood was boiling...

really no point in speaking to him..but lets see what other's think too...

Lets get them out of the council..would be the best..we need to work on a campiagn to get them out...

more idea's please... I know Ian's good suggestion to ask each councillor to tell us his views and ask for their backing to help the football club ..if their don't reply or support us..then we should publish these findings just before the election and tell people the truth so thei can make they minds up to vote for them or not ...

Chris, we ought to talk with the council, but anything gained from a meeting with Stokes would be reversed next year when the whole coalition gets voted out for being totally useless.

If we did approach him it would have to be with someone to do it who doesn't have the emotional attachment to the club we all have (and with the bitter experiences we've endured as well).

I say wait 'til Labour gets back in and then we can resurrect the Britwell plan.

Don't rely on Labour winning next May. With them being in Government there will be a low turnout and anyone could win.

Figure out who the contenders are and work on them. Stokes is only keeping the seat warm.

No point in speaking to Stokes he has two "feasible" ideas for the club to either return to Wexham Park or merge.

Yep agree with that. The beauty of the low turn out in local elections is that they are all vulnerable if we can motivate the vote.

thanks ..keep the ideas coming...

Next May is critical for the club I beleive...without taking sides...the councillor's who back getting the football club back into the borough and pledging to help us to do so which ever party.. the electorate should be told, and if their fail to back up their pledges we will have them for telling lies...and killing the towns football club....and they can then rot in hell !!

Andrew S sent me a PM last year that outlined what seemed to be an extremely sensible approach.

My PM's have all been deleted------Andrew, can you reiterate your idea for keeping pressure on the council?

we all say should we bother with talking to the council but for the next 10 months its the best council we have, and anyway by the time the next election comes around the club could be on the steep slope to lower-league-reformation!

We should at least try to talk to the council sometime this season because its the only chance we have to save the club.

thats a good idea marcus, you guys think that this is possible? we'd just have to hope that someone at the council reads it!!

maybe we should pick a couple of people for it, maybe chris s should be in it too seeing as he is the STST secretary??

Here's a few ideas...

The best way would be to have a business agenda written down before the meeting (with actual facts, and origins of those facts), and stick to it.

The more business like the approach, the more likely the opposition is going to listen.

Also, it would be a good idea to have some 'outside' people in the meeting, so that the correct outcome can be put forward afterwards, not just our/their side of the facts.

Maybe someone from the Non league Daily, or one of next seasons sponsers, if we have one now.

If any approach to the council leaders fail, we should have a fallback plan.

Andrew S suggested this last year

"After completing Phase 1, the identification of where all the councillors stand on the issue, to start a campaign to publish the replies of all of them to specific questions about their support for the club an to make sure that an STFC manifesto is published to get them thinking that we are about to put candidates up against them. We need to know also what the majorities that they had in each ward, so we can identify the weakest. For example if a councillor only had a majority of say 50 votes, and we can identify at least 25 fans and 25 supporters in his/her ward, then they are very vulnerable, and will start to get nervous about saying too much against the club."

If this were to coincide with next years elections, we could make sure the election agenda suited us. It would be non political---just asking voters to read what candidates have said/replied on the issue, and asking them to vote for candidates who support giving Slough a future, and not to vote for those who are against a local club.

This idea would involve a doorstep mail drop to many houses, so would need a lot of volunteers, but could be targetted at the most vulnerable seats if we could not cover the whole borough.

And of course next May could well see us totaly homeless and in crisis

Its a long time until next May, but that will allow us lots of time to get organised.

My guess is that next May's elections will be hard for all concerned as there's a lot of disenchantment against the stance the current ruling group have taken on many issues , and that will give us a rare opportunity to push our cause, and extract some promises.

In the meantime it does no harm to talk , but there needs to be a definite fallback plan as it will probably be needed. Remember how we were fobbed off with promises of "The Friends of Slough?" Whatever happened to them once the pressure was off?

Many people won't be, but don't underestimate the goodwill there is in the town for the club. The protests outside the Town Hall showed that there was a lot of goodwill for us.

Even fairly small shifts in voting can influence several results.

Langley St Mary's 6,257 votes 42.26% turnout 2004.

Neil James ARNOLD Independent Langley Residents 783
Terence William BRENNAN The Conservative Party Candidate 691
Derek Ernest CRYER The Conservative Party Candidate 712
Jeremiah DWYER Independent Langley Residents 711
Thomas William Dymock KELLY The Labour Party Candidate 675
Pauline Florence KEY Independent Langley Residents 769
Patricia Josephine O’CONNOR The Labour Party Candidate 606
Ronald William SIBLEY The Labour Party Candidate 679
Timothy Charles WILLIAMS The Conservative Party Candidate 618.

In that ward all the candidates are likely to have their attention focussed firmly on local issues, and we could make sure ours is one of them.

Other wards where we could well influence the result are Central, Cippenham Green,Chalvey,Kedermister and Upton.

I know we have a much smaller fanbase, but in 1990 fed up the local councils inaction with their pleas to stop groundsharing and go back to the Valley, Charlton fans formed the Valley Party and won 1,500 votes losing some top Labour Councillors there seats. Two years later they got their wish!

And recently Brentford fans fed up with the councils lack of commitment, set up a party and got a councillor elected!
