How can we use the Olympics for ourselves?

Recommended Posts

When you think about our Nation and our own National pride you think about Churchill, Nelson, Shakespear, St George, the unknown soldier and Sir Geoff Hurst to name but a few. To most of us these people are our hereos, they give us a reason for national pride, yet to many they mean nothing they're just names on a random thread on a random forum.

These people to whom the above names mean nothing are normally those we tend to try to disassociate ourselves with. Chavs, Yobs, Tramps, Pikeys, Travellers, Gypsys call them what you will they mean pretty much the same thing, Scum!

The Olympics will be taking place less that 3/4 of an hours drive from my house. For me the opportunities are endless, if I found an Olympic sport and trained daily who knows where I could end up in seven years.

For me though I think the Olympic Champion gravy train has ended, yet the young few who can still catch that train might just have the first class ticket to Olympic success. Who knows a fifteen year old low life yob today could be an Olympic Gold Medal winner tommorrow.

Meanwhile getting back to myself (this thread is ego fuelled), what can I hope to get out of the Olympics? Being someone that would maybe look to getting into journalism at first you would think nothing, but people will want an update on how things are going on in the regeneration of the area of Startford where the Olympic Villege will be built.

News about the Olympics isn't going to fall off the page now, until the opening ceremony, hows that new stadium coming along is what people will want to know.

Builders will obviously be needed as will electricians, plumbers, gas (?) people ect ect ect. Mikefleet the IT (and it appears) phone technician has already planned out his daily route to journey to work in the area, people, with the Olympics on our doorstep people with a lot of money will be calling, will you be ready?!

Finally and in serious danger of going "On Topic" what about our football club Gravesend and Northfleet? Don't think it won't effect us, because it will. With Ebbsfleet and the Thames Gateway opening up in the couple of years, London now has new boundries. This isn't just London's Olympic games, it's ours.

Leaving sport aside for a moment and focusing on travel and tourism what better place to stay while the Olympics are on? Just outside the capital not to far, but just close enough to get to the games via the Railway, Road or even (don't laugh) boat in under an hour? The Thames Gateway is going to be the place to be seen in 2012, (Thats twenty twelve not two thousend and twelve as I have heard it called about a billion times today).

Returning to Sport perhaps they could use Stonebridge Road (or whatever ground were in) for training, warm ups ect ect ect. The focus is going to be on us about the same or if not more than anybody else. Don't think that because it isn't actually in Gravesham that Gravesham won't be effected becuase it almost certinely will be.

London is just the host city, events will be taking place all over Britain, it WILL effect you. Will you stand up and be counted or will you forever be standing on the platform of life wating for the train of opportunity to come your way?

My kind of thread this fing32.gif

..although including tramps in this was a tad harsh, I suppose none of them are likely to read it though.

We can now laugh at old mock.gif Chirac

Because his 'friends' laugh behind his back!

He said our food wasn't fit for a goat

But, you French [****!!****], WE got the vote!!

Beckham wanted them on his manor

I still think the [****!!****] a f*ckin spanner

But Old Seb did us proud with his wonderful words

Give him a medal, it's what he deserves! clap.gif

And for all the people in Trafalgar Square

The rest of us wish that we were there

To join in with all the song and dance

As we put one over them jack.giffrom France!!

So we have the games in 2012

In our pockets, for money, we'll have to delve

But think of the fanny that will come and visit

For all you young un's, it'll be a shame to miss it!! wink.gif

A very well written article Harry.

With Ebbsfleet providing rail services to Stratford it does make you wonder if this is part of "1 big jigsaw" that has all come together as a result of the successful Olympic bid.

You are right to ask what effect, if any, the Olympic bid will have on G&N FC? With the Club only willing to spend minimal money on Stonebridge Road and the article below hinting at a new leisure development in Ebbsfleet could such a facility be used for some aspects of the Olympic games?

Who knows - maybe a new Stadium development for Ebbsfleet was dependant on us hosting the Olympic games? this being the case - there could be some news about a new stadium in the locality imminently. I only hope any potential new stadia development would not include a running track and the seats are red as opposed to blue!

http://www.ctrl.co.uk/english/introduction/stratford.htm:

The Ebbsfleet 'parkway' station, will be served by Eurostar international trains and by domestic trains between London St Pancras, Stratford, Gravesend, the Medway towns and east Kent. Ebbsfleet will be only 15 minutes from St Pancras, compared with the current Gravesend-London time of around 50 minutes. Like Stratford, Ebbsfleet will be a catalyst for regeneration of the surrounding area, part of the Thames Gateway, where a major mixed-use scheme of residential, commercial, industrial and leisure development is planned.

Very droll, Harry. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

The Olympics only lasts a few weeks - if anything is going to have an effect on the club, it'll be the high-speed rail link more than anything else.

Given the above, might I suggest the Daily Mail could do with your (ahem!) talent ...
