legends of the fleet

Recommended Posts

whilst helping at the ground wondering why is it just players are classed as legends?

so i thought who is your legend? the catch is it cannot be a player.

here is my 2,

Peter Norton groundsmen. puts in all hours under the sun during the summer to get the pitch in order for the new season, then during the season 1 week 1 game following week 2 games plus midweek.

keeps the pitch in top order with 3 teams playing on 1 pitch and there are times when he is at ground when he should be putting his feet up.

Maurice Cox stadium maintenace? again puts in all hours trying to keep ground in good order.organising the volunteers to help with work on the ground.

bothe men work so hard for the club and get very little credit from the terraces.

at the end of the month i will do a top 5 or a top ten of legends of the fleet.

remeber NO PLAYERS.

The guy who used to shout "time" and "hold it" at the most inappropriate passages of play in the eighties/nineties.

For instance: attacking corner comes over Dave 'Basil' Boynton leaps unchallenged to meet the ball and as he meets the ball the cry of "hold it" comes from the stand...pure quality.

About 7-10 years ago there was a bloke who'd stand and shout and encourage the team a lot with some bloke who'd sometimes wear an Arsenal coach's jacket (George Graham era) and maybe sometimes with Kenny. Sounds a bit like who Slarti has mentioned, but maybe not.

Maybe he still goes, just I haven't seen him.

Some other bloke who must be in his mid-20s now. His name could be Perry, I don't know. He used to work on the turnstiles and I vaguely knew him as my mum's boyfriend's son was sort of friends with him. I think. He supported Spurs.

I second your suggestion. Maurice was a really nice bloke and most definitely worked very hard in promoting the club. Going back further Tommy Lawrence and Mick Baines are also strong candidates. I also agree with the first two suggestions too, plus Harry H. Also worthy of consideration is long serving steward Gary Vaughan. Jessica is already of course a legend in her own lifetime!

A good point. Perhaps in deciding who should qualify for "legend" status the person(s) should either be purely volunteers or, if paid employees, should have provided a service to the Club that is/was over and above the terms of their employment. This might assist in drawing up a short list.

Eddie MacAlpine.

When I started watching in 1967, he was the keeper, captain, manager, ball boy, sponge man, secretary and office dogs body. He even had a few matchday programmes in his goal to sell!!!

Mind you, we were REALLY crap then!!!
