On the politics.... I think there is now a greater political will to work for a lasting improvement in Africa than there was in the 70s and 80s - including reducing the influence of the despots and dictators that run some of the countries.

Back then too many third world dictators were being legitamised by the west and although we're still not doing enough to prevent the genocide in the Sudan or Mugabe's bid to drive Zimbabwe into poverty, I think things are improving.

Obviously there has to be a holistic approach to the problems, which is why Live8 wasn't just campaiging on debt cancellation. Allowing fair trade, controlling arms sales, supplying HIV drugs, encouraging democracy - all these need to be addressed.

It does work though - the situation in Ethiopia is improving; a long way from being perfect but it is improving.

well you did try and shove us onto another thread...free speech for all is required 'jennie' or else the 'flag' will throw his shadow across all you moderators.......you have been warned.....

as for you tractor boy....sausages indeed it is at the 22 july BBQ and...........an ESL drink up it may be but you are all welcome....

as you for young simon...I've never heard so much uneducated bollox in all my life....there's as much chance of us winning the champions league as the tribal politics in africa becoming stable....

the sudan and the ethiopean tundras are a hotbed of islamic terrorism and mugabwe has been killing orf white africans and other rhodesian/zimbabwian tribes since the 60's....

such dust are dreams made of dear boy......such dust that is swept away by the relentless winds of a tragic but magnificently awesome blood stained history....

Sorry Uncle but I disagree. The situation in Ethiopia is improving. Whilest they are still dependent on aid to feed their people, the government is reforming the economy and as a consequence beginning to attract foreign investment. Although the recent elections were flawed they are a step towards a free democracy.

Surely if these countries want to improve their lot then we have a duty to help them? I find it hard to believe that anybody can be happy to sit back and watch 10s of 1000s die each day and do nothing.

You mention Islamic Terrorists... Which is worse - 1,000s dying as a result of terrorism or 1,000,000s dying through poverty?

hmmmm....well you are entitled to your opinion Simon but it is well known and documented by western intelligence agencies that Ethiopa harbour islamic fundamentalist terrorist groups....it is also a safe bet that Bin Laden is holed up there...

as for what is worse...well starvation is the natural scheme of things in this world Simon....people dying through terrorism is man made...

there will never be democracy in africa....10,000 years of tribal evolution prevent it...

we should do more to sort our own country out....we are hardly an example for third world countries to follow are we....in fact in some ways we are more third world than they are....

Oh dear Unc. "it is well known and documented by western intelligence agencies that Ethiopa harbour islamic fundamentalist terrorist groups" and by the same token, Britain harbours just as many. IE, miniscule, but it keeps the war on terroism going and justifies flattening iraq. If only we took your attitude on Africa when fighting two world wars (IE nothing can be done, so why bother) Britain would be a fasicst state. I always appluad those who try to make a difference. IE, they don't sit on there [****!!****] moaning doing nothing but about things, but rather get up off there [****!!****] and TRY do something. Whatever you think about G8, at least people are TRYING to do something. If anything it's got us talking hasn't it? Awareness on africa was the aim, i think that has been achieved.

People are trying to do something? Like what? Organising a massive rock concert? Oh well, I can see Magube really taking note of that!!! "Oh look, they have organised a rock concert, I must stop persicuting my people". Yeah rite.

I learned of the troubles of Africa from reading and watching the news. I didn't need a rock concert full of tearful, rich, "bling" ridden pop stars to point it out to me. good tho the gig was, we'll all be talking about something else next week (probably, what Geroge Borg has done at the touch line of a Boretree pre season friendly).

Okay Unc, I know you are joking abd us moderators may have far too much power. On this forum you (anyone) are welcome to discuss your thoughts on whatever thread you like... That is what makes this forum so lively and open and we at 'Ricay would like to keep it so...

but, I consider the Live 8 discussion worth of it's own thread and wouldn't want anyone's comments to be "lost" under another thread that was football related...

Have fun...

Maybe my logic is twisted, but I see the anti-G8 & Globalisation mob as playing into the hands of the Capitalists who they so despise.

As noble as some of their demands are regarding Africa...all I see is the G8 crew being given a mandate to FURTHER develop and industrialise Africa, and generally exploit Africans for commercial profit.

Millions of impovershed Africans do not a good market make...but give them the cash, then they'll be spending it on Nikes, Mcdonalds, Starbucks etc.. You get the idea.

The downswing for the Western worker is that wages will become further supressed as Africa will provide yet another centre for cheap labour...just as Asia is.

The rich will become richer, and the poor will merely subsist.
