THE BEATLES "RED" & "BLUE" ALBUMS - THE CHALLENGE

Recommended Posts

In this world of CD's and mini discs, Ipod's and digital MP3's we are not as restricted in how much music we can have on a disc as we were in the good old vinyl days...which brings me to the CD release of these two gems...

When EMI decided to put these hugely popular and quite comprehensive compilations (with the exception that someone forgot that "Revolver" existed) out on CD, The Beatles and the record company got some flack that, for £30 a throw, they were a rip off. Especially the "Red" album which clocks in at about 60 minutes over two discs...

Now, with CD's able to carry 80 minutes of music, what else would you include? You have to have all the tracks of the original release but expand with your own choice...And have to keep within the time lines of the original release...no putting Strawberry Fields on the Red album because you want to make space for Revolution No.9 (why anyone would want to do that is beyond me...but still).

The period that each CD covers is

The Red album - 1962 - 1966 (singles from "Love Me Do" to "Paperback Writer" - albums from "Please, Please Me" to "Revolver").

The Blue Album - 1967 - 1970 (singles from "Penny Lane" / "Strawberry Fields Forever" to "Let It Be" - albums from "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" to "Let It Be").

No remixed songs (ala "Let It Be...Naked") or Anthology material can be used. It has to be what was released between 1962 - 1970. And no covers!!!

Good luck...

I own the blue album, but that's probably my only worthwhile contubution to this thread!

What a disappointment. Seeing your name on the last poster I rushed to see how you would re-construct the Beatles career.

But sadly your post is uncannily similar to the one I thought about posting last night, except I own neither of the albums.

There is a decent Beatles compilation out there, but it hasn't been made yet.

THe Problem With The Beatles Is:

Driving to my gig today I heard Paul MacCartney & Wings song 'My Love' on the Steve Wright Love Songs show on Radio 2. That was quite nice. I hummed along and all that but everytime a song like that passes into my ears my admiraton for the 'good' beatles stuff drops a notch or two.

And so when I do consider playing some 'good beatles', or whether the beatles had a 'proper good' period - my mind is suddenly swamped by all the MOR and I finish up playing Jim Reeves instead.

So I give you:
Jim Reeves is better than the beatles.

She's A Woman

Taxman

I'm Only Sleeping

Here, There and Everywhere

She Said, She Said

Good Day Sunshine

Tomorrow Never Knows

As they once themselves sang 'Let It Be'. It's a pet hate of mine, when extra tracks are added just to fill up all the time on the CD. I want something I can listen to in the time it takes to have my tea, or have a bath, and sometimes the 'bonus' tracks ruin the flow of the record. If I had my way all albums would be 45 minutes long MAXIMUM- less is more. BTW not too keen on the Red myself, the Blue is better. Don't own Revolver, I'm sure it's very good just never got around to buying it. I did inherit from my old dear 19 Beatles singles on 7" most with Apple sleeves, but you don't want to hear what happened to them.

And another rant- why why why are Beatles albums so expensive? Let It Be (Original) was £20 in Virgin last week. If it was a question of quality I could understand it, but you can find mid price albums from every classic artist from the 60's and 70's so it's not that.

I would agree with you as for as the timing of CD's. Too many bands do fill up with rubbish...it takes an exceptional band to fill 45 minutes plus with quality..."Say You Will" by Fleetwood Mac is one of them. A quality CD clocking in at about 70 minutes with the opening track as the only "duff" track
