Talking of long-lost classics...

Recommended Posts

Spacemen 3 do a couple of covers of Rollercoaster. One from their debut album "Sound of Confusion", and one on a b-side ("Walkin' with Jesus" - I think), but this version is on a compliation of their early singles called "Translucent Flashbacks".

It's the Translucent Flasbacks one that is 17 minutes long. I only listen to to it when I'm in a certain "mood". There's also a version of the MC5's Starship on there - crazy!

"Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To" is one of my favourite titles for an album. I've just finished reading a book about Spacemen 3 and I'm suprised they managed to release any music. Anyway, let me know if you fancy some Spacemen 3 stuff - I can also burn you a CD or something. Drone on!

Yep, their first single "Anyway that you want me" was a Troggs cover. That version of "Feel So Sad" is brilliant. One of my favourite singles of all time.

I suppose we could start a new thread - singles that never appeared on albums (excluding compliations that appear years later). The first three Spiritualized singles - Anyway that you want me, Feels So Sad, and Smile.

Whatever - Oasis ........

A Spacemen 3 thread? Quality. By Recurring the Boom / J Spaceman split had become too obvious, but the predecessor LP, Playing With Fire , remains one of the great late 80s records (would feature in my top 10, let alone 100). Few records have managed to combine tracks as distinct as "Suicide" and "Lord, Can You Hear Me" and still retain an overall sense of cohesion. Sound of Confusion is ok and The Perfect Prescription is a wonder - but note that arguably improved versions of tracks from these first two LPs can be found on a recent 2CD retro release called Forged Prescriptions . There's a great version of "Starship" also on the otherwise relatively lame live LP, Performance . Always thought it odd that S3 were on Fire records, home of the far more jangly post C-86 UK offerings of the likes of The Close Lobsters or Perfect Disaster who, while having their moments, were just not in the same league. Zagreus, did you know the boy Boom is apparently about to release some archive mid-80s S3 tracks including unreleased tunes and versions at an extortionate price? Could be interesting...

Zeal - Grateful Dead - anything post 74 75 is way dodgy. Aoxomoxoa and Anthems of the Sun are the more experimental late 60s LPs - where Lesh's modern classical training comes through - then the Pigpen / Garcia trad stuff came more to the fore on American Beauty (the acknowledged masterpiece) and Workingman's Dead - both absolutely wonderful and highly recommended records. But the Dead really worked best live - any of the Dick's Picks series from the pre-74 period are great - easier to find should be Europe '72 which was orignally a 3-LP set and is a disc of which you will not tire.

G Angel - yes, Mr Boom has got 100 copies selling for 40 quid each. It's to help finance the recording of the latest Spectrum album (which seems to have been in production for the last 4 years!). It's called "How the blues shoulda tuned out" - track listing below. It doesn't really excite me really.

Disc One

1. 2:35 (other alternate mix)

2. 2:35 (other feedback mix)

3. That's Just Fine (demo)

4. Rollercoaster (edit)

5. Walkin' With Jesus (noddin' off mix)

6. Soul 1 (demo)

7. Velvet Jam (rehearsal)

8. We Sell Soul (sonic vocal version)

9. Walkin' With Jesus (out of tune mix)

10. Velvet Jam (live)

11. Bo Diddley Jam (demo)

Disc Two

1. Ecstasy Symphony (live)

2. Ecstasy Symphony (alternate mix)

3. Ecstasy In Fast Motion

4. Ecstasy Symphony (demo)

5. Spacemen Jam (full-length version)

PS have you read the recent Dreamweapon book by Erik Morse. It's an interesting read! Sad to read about how it all ended.
