So I'm a winner and a loser, splendid!

Well it's up to the likes of Ann Main to start change and become a quality opersition. Otherwise Labour will have another free road to victory.

And I don't think the goverment have too much say over speed cameras. The only time I was ever flashed by a speed camera was under the Tories.

Yes, even if I was pissed I could only be sent home after med screening then face a disaplinary hearing.

So you are telling me that you could be totally out of it doing your job and the company policy wouldn't let them send you home until you've been medicaly assessed? Could they take you off your shift prior to the assesment ?

god I feel safe on the railways.

They can send you home if they think you are unfit for work, but you couldn't actually get sacked until after the results come in.

Anyway if I was pissed at work then the controllor would just tell me to go home sick and not report it.

Last time I checked you didn't even drive your car anywhere judging by the fuel consumption.

I'm meeting with a mate who works for your company on thursday so I'll find out more then.

If what you are saying is true then the whole thing sounds totally corrupt to me. There is no incentive to actually do your job properly, and so innocent peoples lives are put at risk.

This is one for Watchdog.

Not quite, I'm sure if you turned up pissed or smelling of booze at your office your boss would probably have a quiet word in your shell like and suggest you went home sick.

Now if I were a driver or a conductor it may be a different story, however one of the questions when you book on is "are you under the influence of drink or drugs", if you answer it honestly (if you were) then you just wouldn't book on.

Lets try this out, your a qualifed brain surgeon and the head of the NHS trust bowls into the hospital and says "No, do it this way", I'm sure he can sack you but he can't tell you how to do brain surgery.

Anyway the MD can't sack me, we are unioned up to the hilt on the railway

thorns in 'my job is like a brain surgeons' shocker...
union reps today led out all rail controllers in the south east as it became apparent their renumeration was not comparable to brain surgeons living in the area..
left wing firebrand.. 'animal farm' thorns, took a moment from burning broken pallets in an oil drum to say these words..

brain..? i meant my mate brian..

So the MD could sack a driver or conductor then. Well, that's something I suppose.

I honestly never realised that you were that important within silverlink. I envy you having a secure job for life mate. There are not many people who are as fortunate as you.

No, the MD couldn't sack a driver or conductor either. Nobody can be sacked on the spot, there are very complex disaplinary procedures on the railway.

Pre-privatisation it would be a job for life, bit less secure now but still a fairly safe bet, god that's quite depressing
