LPs 2 to 5 are generally regarded as the must haves:

Surrealistic Pillow - short and has White Rabbit and Somebody to Love

After Bathing At Baxters - difficult but ultimately rewarding LSD freak out

Crown of Creation - mellower than ABAB

Bless Its Little Pointed Head - live LP with excellent title

I've got the Grateful Dead's debut album from 1967, and had always assumed they were very much from that era, but I've noticed they continued to release albums through the 70s and 80s.

When did they stop being 'essential' and which album should I get next.

That question directed to G Angel or GazzaBTFC, please! (Or anyone else who happens to know?)

Cheers in advance!

Isn't there the infamous Worthing story?

He He Zeal, you're very easy to wind up. I have a bit more 60's stuff than you realise, I do own 2 Beatles albums, and I like both of them and must of heard most of their other stuff and certainly wouldn't argue if you were to supply me with the back cat. It's a bit like discribing all my music as drum machines with distortian pedels, it's about hitting that spot

I actually own 56 tracks by The Small Faces and I've heard all of them several times so I think if I want to call them my favorite band of the 60's then I can. In response to your other stuff, I've heard plenty of The Kinks, The Byrds but I'm not a big fan of The Who.

I own a Nick Drake album and have heard plenty of stuff by Captain Beefheart and The Band, although I won't admit to knowing a great deal about a lot of the other bands on g.angels list but obviously I've heard of a fair few of them.

I think the 70's is more my retro era, from the whole american soul scene on the late 60's through to punk and I know how much you dislike punk, even though it probably did as much for music as the bands you talk about so much from the 60's, but unlike yourself I'm prepared to open my ears to your 60's stuff while you seem very insular with your taste.

Heres to shouty pop

I'm not going to sit here and list stuff from the 70's, I have tons of Northern Soul and if you knew anything about the genre then you'd know that it was never about the artists but the songs, I could namedrop but I won't.

As for punk, well the obvious ones like the Pistols but then you have New York Dolls, Ramones, Clash, Subway Sect are a personal favorite of mine, then you have the work of people like Billy Childish who is still going strong today with Thee Headcoates.

Abba and the Grease soundtrack, great that's just like saying the 60's was only about the Beatles and the Stones, very poor show from a fellow music fan. Although I can tolarate a good funk/disco track and can be partial to a bit of glam!

It's simple!

You liked the 60's, I liked the 70's, you liked the 80's, we both liked the 90's and I like the 00's, that's a good summary!

I quite like some of the original rock'n'roll of the 50's as well but I'm not going to list Bill Haleys comtemporarys for you!

I could spend all morning here picking holes in this message, but I really haven't got the time!!

 • With regards to Abba and Grease, I was inferring that they are probably the only two albums you own from the 70s!
 • Not sure how anyone who wasn't 'there' can like the Sex Pistols! Weren't they all about the attitude? If it's their music you like, then your taste is obviously even more sh*t than I thought!!
 • "Subway Sect are a personal favourite" of yours! Hahahahaha! Hilarious! You've never mentioned them to me before in your life. And for someone who only ever talks about the music he likes, I'd have thought your favourite 70s band would have popped up occasionally!!
 • Yes, I do like the 60s and 80s, but I also like the 70s, of course. If you check out my Top 100 albums, I reckon there's probably more 70s albums on there than 60s and 80s put together. You don't like the 70s at all. You just like punk because you think it complements your 'attitude', but believe me, there's a hell of a lot more to 70s music than spotty teenagers who can't play their instruments.
 • You know nothing about Northern Soul (it's actually 60s music mate, not 70s), apart from the fact you found out recently that Tainted Love was originally done by a bird called Gloria Jones, and was not actually a Soft Cell original, and now you're dining out on that because you've sussed that none of your friends are interested in Northern Soul, hence you can pretend to like the genre without being 'found out'!

What a load of fking bollox, I probably own more records than you, ahve been to more gigs than you (even if they have been crap underground indie bands) how dare you sit there like your some kind of music guru when I've never met anyone with such an insular taste.

If you check my previous message I talk about Northen Soul as being soul music from america in the late 60's, it arrived in the UK in main in the early 70's which coinsided with the rise of places like Wigan Casino and the Mecca in Blackpool. So I have a Northen Soul t-shirt, fk me, how pretentious do you think I am, do you own any Beatles ones? I have brought a lot of this music over the years, have a pretty good collection and done research into the scene. Thanks for the Tained Love tit bit, I actually never knew that. And I have plenty of friends into Northen Soul, just because you don't know them.

You talk about the "attitude" of punk, well it's still going these days mate. And a lot of the hippy crap you listen to was all about 60's love, don't remember seeing you there either.

As refers Subway Sect, I have 1000's of artists, do I have to mention every one I like. I doubt I've ever mentioned the Ramones and New York Dolls as well, but as you've probably never heard of Subway Sect and you've heard of the others you pick holes in it. Pop out and have a listen to Ambition by Subway Sect if you have a minute, it might open your ears. In fact Vic Godard (sorry I've never mentioned him before either) is still touring Subway Sect stuff, fancy seeing him next time he's in London.

I've never read such a pile of [****!!****] in my life, do I have to lay every single thing I like in my life on the table before I can enter a conversation with you. I sat there in the pub with you a few weeks ago plucking about 20 tracks from 1985 off your i-pod that I wanted, I never got "You never said you liked Debarge, Strawberry Switchblade before", fk me Mai Tai were my favorite band in 1985, you didn't know that, I admitted in a previous thread that Deacon Blue were my favorite band for a while, sorry I never told you that either. Maybe you'd like to complie a questionairre for me so you know a bit more about me.

On a lighter note, if you fancy lunch gimme a ring at the normal time on Thurs
