Why not lead him on to his heyday playing for Romford Gas in the Southern Essex Combination!

Praps he and Billy Bonds played for both on the odd occasion!!

We had Peter Lay (ex Forest and Dartford etc and who was recently featured in the Romford Recorder) playing for my local Romford League team as a permit player in the early 60s. Dave Smith was also involved in latter times and , I believe, a few other current and past Boro supporters.

Before he joined us and went to work at Fords as the sports ground GM I did have an invitation to go over with Peter to Dartford for a trial but didn't fancy the travelling as it was a Blackwall Tunnel job in those days and I didn't even think about away matches.

Wonder how many other ex pro permit players played in local football before it all went open.

After my time Zody.

I ran the team originally and played centre forward or left wing. This was at a period when we moved up through all the divisions in succeeding seasons and provided three players for the Romford League side. Namely Graham Jones, Ken White and myself.

Norman Filmer played right back and the Lees brothers wherever. Alan Jones was also still playing I believe and involved in management.

Peter played centre half when he joined us and must have taken over the main striker slot when I left to move to sarf London to eventually get married.

Am I right in thinking that the club ran two teams for a while as well?

Norman played in defence, as did spooner smiff, but as you said after your time, being a great deal younger than you , old chap, mind you being bald and grey as I am you have worn better than me.

whats the secret,
