It's 9 years to the day since....

im normally to pissed to remember or care about the quality of the football.. each tournament will be rated as how much fun i had watching it.. in that respect euro 96 is my top tourny followed by

WC 98.. WC 90 was the best recent achievment by an england team but i watched a lot of it at home as my missus had just dropped with my first born so it scores lowly with me.. the last WC was a good laugh on the booze front and beating the argies was a particular high point..

I've said this before, but I will say it again...

Our problem as 'Brits' is that we're too happy to pat our sporting losers on the back and say how proud we are of them.

"Ah... well done Tiger Tim. You may have choked your semi-final against Goran, but hey, it's the taking part that counts and you did ever so well to get there, didn't you?"

"Well lads, you've lost to Germany for the umpteenth time of penalties, but bravo chaps"

The Germans, or the Aussies simply don't do this - and that is why they only breed Winners.

You are a prime example of this mate, as you were pleased with 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Not five hours, just thought about it then.

"At least in 1990 our three draws came against Jack Charlton's very solid Irish side, Holland - the European Champions, and Germany - the eventual winners."

I read that to mean you were pretty pleased with our three draws in the tournament.

Yeah I am actually. They were the better team, lost on penalties but that is football. They pissed all over a supposedly excellent Arsenal side for 120 mins, and for that I was proud.

"Mourinho also found time for a quick jibe at Sir Alex Ferguson's United.

"I saw the Manchester United players and manager after their last home game go for a lap of honour after losing to us," he said.

"If they had done that in Portugal they would have had bottles thrown at them."

Have to agree with Mourinho, personally. This is why we're a nation of under-achievers. Far to quick to applaud our sporting losers.
