Michael Murphy

Recommended Posts

Just read the small article in the Observer about Michael Murphy leaving.

Said that Eddie phoned him to say he might not be able to keep him due to financial constraints and that players will have to take a pay cut. It doesn't say that Murph turned down a pay cut.

Can we read into this that the club will have a smaller squad next season and that Murph was just surplus to requirements? If so, it seems strange because I thought he was one of our best players.

I thought the meaning was pretty clear. Slough don't have the money to pay his wages. Staines were looking for a new left back, and he obviously though that he wasn't going to hang around to see if he still had a future at Slough, by which time it might have been too late to find a new club.

Surely, Eddie could slot Ian Lovegrove to cover his position. I would also guess that his wages are cheaper, this could be a way of Eddie cost cutting to keep some of the players on higher wages from leaving.

So are you saying that Slough wanted Murph to stay but he was not prepared to take a pay cut?

Or did Eddie decide that he was prepared to let one of our best players go (as I understand it he was not one of the easiest players to manage) in order to try and keep our other top players who must be on at least equal or better wages.

We can only guess at the true facts.

I would have thought the reason for this is that Martyn Deaner hasn't given Eddie a budget for the forthcoming season, and therefore Michael Murphy wanted to ensure he is playing football next season and earning a regular wage for it. As one of our better performers last season (IMO) I would have thought that Eddie would have wanted to keep Mike Murphy.

If the players don't know the situation at the club (i.e Matt Murphy's post a while ago) then I doubt any of the fans will either. At least not yet.

I think the sooner people lower their expectations for next season the better!

To be honest ARRAS, we have bigger problems at the moment than who will be playing left back next season.

It looks as though we may have a smaller budget, if that means we have a team full of youngsters then so be it, no doubt everyone will get behind the team whoever is in it, and what ever the results!

Dominic, your right, we have to lower our expectations for next season and get behind the team no matter what happens, because, as it stands we will have a smaller budget, how small is anyones guess.

Following Murph leaving, the best guess being he wanted some sort of guarantee, I think we have to be realistic and say there are a number of the remaining squad who are going to follow suit and jump ship, again, we can only assume it will be our best players.

If this does happen we can only assume that Eddie will try and rustle up players from outside the club who are willing to play for low wages and a club, as it stands, with a bleak future.

Should Eddie be unable to do this we can assume he will have to draw on the Capital league players who, with all due respect, are no where good enough for this standard.

If this scenario was to happen and knowing the quality of the teams in the premier division and the fact that only a few won't have strenthened their squad, to survive relegation would be a miracle.

When you say 'no doubt everone will get behind the team' I assume you mean the hardy, loyal supporters who will support their team through thick and thin i.e. trust members/season ticket holders. I think most of the remainder will drift away leaving gates of between 100/150.

Of course, if Deaner was to answer the Clubs pleas, come out of the woodwork and say everythings ok for next season lads, then most of the above won't happen!!!

Clearly Eddie, Roy and Bernard are *planning* for a smaller budget this season, if Mr Deaner decides he no longer wants to 'sponsor' the football club, so are getting things in place early.

If Mr Deaner does continue to 'sponsor' the club then new players can be brought in I guess and players could return, like (and i'm guessing) Michael Murphy as he's only on forms at Staines, which just means a 7-day approach and did not want to leave.

Just a case of wait and see...

Michael's a local lad so Staines is a logical destination. Better than going back to Windsor. It looks like we will have a young squad looking to impress and that could provide many upsets next season.
