On the recomendation of Thorns I decided to purchase this CD. Anyone who is willing to proclaim that a CD is album of the year is worth an investigation...last night I had the chance to play it. So CD player on, pint of Stella and a packet of fags, press play and er...oh...not what I expected...the singing is almost rappy...songs are basic, punky...Hmmmmmmm....Quite amusing some of the lyrics.....

 

Overall, as a novelty CD is works. My favorite track is Emeily Kane which, in the hands of a better singer (and a better band), would be a top tune. In fact, where is my guitar? The song deserves better..maybe an acoustic arrangement with some nice harmonies on the hook.

 

Q gave it 2/5, which is harsh. Mojo gave it 7/10, which is giving it too much respect. I would go for 5/10. Maybe it will grow on me but it'll only be one I'll play once in a blue moon. Don't dismiss it but approach with caution.

I've heard three of their songs, Gazza.

 

Formed A Band which is dreadful.

Bad Weekend which I can't even remember (that good, eh)

Emily Kane which is passable.

 

If you reckon Emily Kane is the best track on there, that doesn't bode too well for Kev and the boys!

 

Gertcha has kindly (?) burned me a copy, so I too will give it a listen.

...then again there are better novelty records..."Hole In The Ground" by Bernard Cribbins would be one...

As you know, I'm a big fan and live they put on a good show. The trouble for me is that it isn't new material (apart from two tracks). It's hard to get excited about a release of stuff you've been listening to for almost a year.

 

Emily Kane is my favourite though. Good to see it's not just Thornsy that has a problem with that title.

Seriously tho, get your guitar, re arrange Emily Kane for acoutic, put some harmonies on the hook and it is a "tune"...

'The Day You First Sold Out' needs a big harmonic chorus like 'All The young dudes' with Sniff-tastic vocal digs and it'll be as universal as Happy Birthday.
