does a membership sec. pay aswell

The Boro Membership Secretary puts the money in the pot for all anticipated members for next season and then collects the money afterwards.

Didn't anyone make this clear to you when you volunteered Coup?

be good to see you all.

regarding the colegate affair.

this could have incredibly damaging implications for the rest of football if chavley cole goes ahead with his appeal on the basis of his human rights being infringed by his contract.

what it could ultimately lead to is the scrapping of contracts totally...

the arrival of chelsea and their subsequent actions could be the death of football as we know it.

Does this mean that AFC Hornchurch can steam in for Terry Henry and other such under performers and all they have to do is stump up their travelling expenses??

Red bus rovers all round I say!!!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/bigshock.gif" alt="" />

Whoopee.

I say cancel the contracts of all these underperforming overpaid eejuts and give them a £100 per game basic and a performance based match bonus of up to £1,000.

Then give all the rest of the money the top game is awash with to ....

..... Level 5 Non League Football Teams

On the subject of Chelsea being the death of football, I can't help feeling that they are no more bang to rights than Liverpool and Aston Villa. The only difference to the behaviour of these three was that they were charged and found guilty of acting in a manner that is not uncommon throughout football at all levels.

The real difference this time is that Cole looks like he will pursue the restraint of trade angle. Personally I think that he is right to do so. Before everyone cries foul, just a few things to think about:

- Everyone said that scrapping the maximum wage would be the death of football. It wasn't

- Everyone said that freedom of contract in the seventies would be the death of football. It wasn't.

- Everyone said that the Bosman ruling would be the death of football. It wasn't

- If you work for Barclays Bank and feel that you could do better for yourself, why shouln't you be able to to talk to HSBC and look for a move.

- The real secret to exercising some control would be that players contracts in future include a condition on periods of notice. If you work for Barclays Bank again, most of you will probably need to give a one month period of notice before moving on. If you hold a key job, or sit on their board of directors it will probably be three or six months. Add some compensation clauses about percentage of transfer fee invested at beginning of their contract being payable on leaving before a contract expires and you may even start to exercise some control on transfer fees.

this 'you'd listen if a prospective employer offered you a higher salary' is nonsense.

of course I would but then I'm allowed. footballers under contract aren't. What next, a tube or bus driver claiming he can have four pints at lunchtime because he sees employees in other professions like banking, publishing, building or the law do it?

JtH - excellent points, but players like cole really don't care whether they are on 3 month "contracts" or whatever. it's the players at lower levels who will suffer as a result of his actions and their possible consequences.

imagine the div2 footballer, on a fairly nice whack of around 40-50k per year. all of a sudden his job security is out of the window. no contract, no security. unable to get a mortgage or guarantee his family's future.

dark day whatever way you look at it. football will recover, no doubt, but has been dealt a terrific wound by chavley cole's actions.

also, if the rule is so wrong, why did he not get david james, gary neville and the rest of the PFA brigade to complain and then threaten to strike if it isn't changed, RATHER than moan and stamp yer feet after being caught red handed breaking the rule.

chavley cole is scum. no football fan should be supporting his actions.

Contracts to some are like loyalty, something to be ignored when it suits them.

A1ITT -

I agree with your sentiments concerning the Div 2 player on £40-50k in terms of the lack of security. Unfortunately that is the way of the modern world. Try getting a job in retail working at Lakeside. The day of the permanent job is fast disappearing. You will most likely be offered a twelve month contract at a rate of about £12k a year. Not a lot left after tax, fares, rent etc Now go into a building society and an estate agent to size up the size of mortgage they will lend you and the range of property this translates into.

As an aside, I suspect that Div 2 players earning more than £30k a year are an exception rather than the rule.
