The web site

I will be upgrading the web site this afternoon. While it is being done there will be a "placeholder" instead of the main page because the new version isn't compatible with the old one.

Once it's done, it should look very similar to the current version. It'll just be a whole lot easier for us to upgrade/add stuff to the menu/etc. in future.

It is now done and was relatively painless. It just took time but most of the work had already been done.

If you have bookmarked the page, make sure your bookmark doesn't point to the old "index.htm". The best bet is to make sure it points to...

http://www.etfc.co.uk/

There will probably be some teething troubles because the setup is completely different to the old one even though I have made sure it looks very similar. There will be some more entries on the menu in the not too distant future (I hope) depending on how quickly stuff gets put together. If you have any problems, send a PM or e-mail to either me or Neil and we will try to sort things out.

One thing I should point out is that the forthcoming fixtures will only show up the next five at the moment. This is because I expect us to get our league fixtures for the whole season in July and I don't want the whole lot showing in that list.

So what are the improvements with this set-up? Well, mainly it makes it much easier to change the menu because we only have to do it once now, instead of on every one of a large number of pages. We can also do silly things like have an optional christmas page style without losing one of the others. Some parts of the site are automated which cuts down on the amount of work Neil and I have to do. It is mainly for our benefit but you should get a better site from it.

Thank you all for your kind words. I assume you weren't on-line the other night when I spent two hours trying to work out why the lottery page wouldn't load properly before realising I'd updated it with the wrong file! Went in to work the next day looking and feeling even more like a zombie than I normally do...

BTW, just in case you haven't noticed, I have added a button which links to the season ticket form so it will stay on the front page when the news part of it changes and you won't have to go looking through the archive for May 05 news to find the original link.

The new web site looks good, and I'm pleased to hear that you will have less work updating it in the future, so that you can concentrate more on content.

I clicked on a couple of 'Our opponents' links, and they were not exactly full of information, but I suppose this is an example of the the content which it will be easier, and therefore less work and quicker, to update in the future.

Congratulations on your magnificent work on the site!

If you got error messages it's because we haven't written those pages yet. I think I'm right in saying that if we've played them in the past there is a page, plus there is one for Aveley because it is basically last season's London APSA page after I doctored it.

The bit about it being easier to update is that there is only one menu now instead of one on every page. It will still look like there is a menu on every page though. Because there is only one menu, we only have one page to update to add extra links to sections of the site or to outside pages so that they appear on every page. The menu was a problem in the past, as I know from experience -- I had to update far more pages than can be healthy in order to bring the site into line with the Disability Discrimination Act.

There are some other minor advantages to the way the site is set up now as well. It has been an "interesting exercise"!
