think I have done the right thing telling you all, you best check

Gentlemen,

You might find this of interest.

According to research after I got flashed/clocked on the A1 recently I found out that recent Government legislation changing the Freedom of Information Act gives you access to speed camera offences registered within the last twelve months and is placed on a freely accessible website.

Did you know that every time you go even over a mile or so over the speed limit, it is registered and placed on the database? They only send a ticket if you are more than 10% plus 3 mph over, OR (and here is an interesting little known fact.. if you receive over 20 near misses")

You can now check how many you have against your car's registered number. Check this page:

http://www.e-database.co.uk

It will ask you for a password - but just click on the 'need a password/' link and you'll be given one in a pop-up window. In the top right hand corner there is a "click-on" window and it even shows the picture taken by the camera!!!

Too damn right. My no. 1 hate at the moment are cyclists. Up town they are a total menace. I always thought that a red traffic light means stop, not proceed without caution and pavements are for pedestrians, no?

And whilst I am ranting, why can they go on the roads without insurance? They should have a licence, say £10 a year and a small no. plate. I have noticed now around the Bishopsgate/Embankment areas a plethora of inspector knackers on bikes who regularly pull said miscreants.

I reckon a £1,000 fine or three months in solitary with Tesco's value bread and holy water. That'll teach the selfish ba$tards!!!

I presume you don't drive,Tom.

There are good stats that prove that keeping to 30mph on residential roads is a very good saftey measure,BUT the speed of 70mph as a national speed limit was introduced well before the Ford Anglia took to the roads.Cars in them days mostly couldn't handle properly ,had very poor brakes.had no safty features (such as airbags). On quiet motorways, speeds of 90-100 mph can be acheived in total comfort and total safety wth todays modern cars.

What infuriates drivers is the fact that busy bodies at local council level (most left wing dreamers)are imposing their own restrictions on roads. For example ,the safest and most free flowing stretch of the A406 has 40/50/60 mph signs randomly placed along the dual carriageway. They then have cameras stratigically place to catch drivers out as the signs change.Who has the authority to change the national dual carrigeway speedlimit ? It's some jobsworths with to much time on their hands looking to raise more revenue. Its the same with yellow lines being taken out,or parking meters being placed everywhere. Its to try to blackmail motorists out of their cars (motorists that pay on average £4 k a year, mostly in tax,in order to run the bloody thing) and the council get the added benifit of raising massive amounts of money ,whilst they are p*ssing every motorist off.Nearly a million new drivers apply to take their driving test each year in Britain. What is the government answer. Not to try to improve the roads to cope,NO,they make it even more difficult to get around and park.

Now don't get me started on speedhumps. They kill hundreds of patients in the back of Ambulances each year(check the official figures),smash up peoples suspension, which in turn makes their car generally less safe on the road.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH.

So please Tom and Coup, don't preach about something you don't participate in.I've had enough of Red Ken doing that ,to last me a lifetime.

I think you've spent too much time hanging around on street corners Coup,if your managing to see a procession of girls in short skirts riding around on bicycles.I travel up to a thousand of miles a week around the country , and i've never seen one.

Are You sure your not confusing real life, with one of your 'speciality videos'.

I don't own a car at present, no, because quite frankly I wouldnt use it enough to make it worthwhile. But I do still drive from time to time.

But the key point is, whether or not you agree with the law, it's still the law and if you choose to ignore it that's your lookout.

As for the speed limit changes, I don't know about your eyesight but I reckon I can see a 40mph sign from far enough away to be able to reduce my speed before I reach the bright yellow speed camera. If you can't see both in time to slow down, again that's your lookout.

I've never been caught by a speed camera,Tom.My point is ,that i do not feel i should be keeping a constant lookout for speed signs saying 40mph and yellow cameras, especially as the road should have a regulation 60mph limit.Who has the authority to make up a speed limit off the top of their head,or chuck 10 tones of concrete onto the road and call it a 'traffic calming measure'.

The answer is,any jumped up tin-pot busy body in local council, and there very little we can do about it.The irony is ,most of the people who are employed by local council traffic departments, apply for the jobs through The Guardian's legengary civil service job pages. So we end up with 'hippies in bicycle clips' trying to manage the ever complex road system.

For example. near my house we had a high street that, until recently, was fairly free flowing. It had two sets of zebra crossings in the 400 yard stretch of the high street. Some 'spark' at local planning thought it would be a good idea, two weeks ago, to install traffic lights at these Zebra crossings .Now we have gridlock along the highstreet most of the day.People stop and press the button ,the light goes red, they cross, you then sit there for another 30 seconds tapping the steering wheel waiting for the lights to change.Once a couple more cars move up,the same things happens.Result.It now takes you 20 minutes to travel the 400 yard strech instead of 2 minutes.

20 million people worldwide killed by the Car since it's invention.

The law is the law- Speed limit is a limit not a target. If 90% of society speeds does that make it right? 20 years ago 90% of the adult populus smoked was that right?

The simple fact is that you know the limit if you break it tough poop.

Although I agree that the method behind the cameras is income generating rather than safety.

Otherwise they could have variable speed limits on motorways depending on the time of day. Over night - 140 say. rush hour 50.

It's the feckers that sit in the middle lane that wind me up

Did you ever tape music off the radio as a youngster, Shaun.

If so,you were technically breaking the law.

Even the police, who benifit from handing out fines, think the motorway speed limit is unworkable and outdated.Thats why they won't touch you unless you go at least 11mph over the limit (81mph).You will find in practice that very few forces stop anyone under 85 mph.
