Canvey's first season in the Conference

Having had something of a soft spot for the Islanders in recent years, I must say I'm a bit surprised by how this year turned out - I had your lads down to piss the Conference (more or less). For those who watch the team week in and week out, what would you say were the contributing factors, and do you expect a much better showing next season?

Think we achieved what we set out to do, and that was to stay up.

IMHO some of the factors were (and I'm not saying this didn't effect other teams during the season and this is not a list of excuses - as I say we achieved what we set out to achieve)-

Injuries, particularly Lee Boylan.

Officials - worse than the Ryman at times.

Keeping the bulk of our Ryman Championship squad - some of whom were not good enough for Conf Nat.

Different team line ups - sometimes week in week out.

Strange management decisions - although as fans we are not always aware of the full picture.

On occassions having players play out of their natural position.

Frailties and being exposed in all areas of the pitch including defence, midfield and attack.

Formation - we tended to play three at the back, where there has been discussions on this forum that we should have played a 4-4-2

Overall fitness levels compared to the ex-league sides.

Being drawn into the "hoofball style" at times by playing "those" sort of teams rather than concerntrating on "our" style of play.

Think we will do better next season. A clearout of sorts has begun and we have found some good players in the form of John Keeling and Mario Notto. I'm sure Glann and Jeff have learnt a great deal - just depends on some new signings and them putting it all into practice. If we do I think we may finish a creditable mid table which won't be bad for a part-time club.

don't you think jeff should do like the leyton manager and get someone in that knows well the division? he has done a tremendous job but i personally believe he has taken the club as far as he can.

love reading your comments on here about everything and anything, you write a damned good comment everytime but I totally agree that a more experienced and professional manager would possibly be the first factor on getting us going in the right direction: ONWARDS AND UPWARDS. ... but Jeff who is everything to this club has still got to play a major roll.

Tilson had no previous experience in the league.

Southend didn't seem to need someone with league experience to get them in the play offs. In fact previous managers with experience failed.

Just a thought.

I agree that Jeff will always have a major roll.

the way i see it,jeff and glen need someone that is more tactically aware and has excellent coaching ability for the level they are playing at.it doesn't mean that we should get rid of them, only that it's a team work and at this level tactically and fitness wise you have got to get it right.too many injuries and is not down to bad luck and too many matches where the opposition were better organized and more tactical aware...

come on jeff and glen, you have been great but now you need help, get someone in!

yes , of course conference football is way above anything glenn has experienced in football..

lets get in some one with real has-been journeyman conf knowledge so glenn can benefit from his experience ..

it is a learning experience for Jeff and Glen too. they have only had one season. if we are in the same position at the end of the season as we were this season then it might be an option. but hopefully they have learned from mistakes made and will be better this season.

who for example could be bought in then?..

and presumably glenn will get the boot as well in this master plan..

or will we have the only part time team in the country with an average 800 odd crowd with a manager a coach and a technical director..

i think jeff and glenn have done great but i look at stevenage they brought in andy ford in just to help out and look how well they have done since he went there.i dont want jeff and and glenn to still not do what they do now but maybe an extra pair of eyes and ears isnt that bad

if your glen was that great just because he played in the first division why the team has been struggling? there is a lot of difference between dealing with primary school kids and overpaid and overrated bunch of mercenary players next year you will be in the same position if you don't get someone in and with the wages that you are paying and the players you have the team should have been in a much healthier position you have to make your players play even if you have 11 phenomenons and judging from what we have seen this year that hasn't happened(no excuses)at least the leyton chairman-manager has been honest enough to admit that he has limits.are your Glen or jeff that honest?

im still waiting for your list of say 5 candidates..?

who you think are good enough and would be willing to work at canvey..

as for not good enough.. so you were expecting canvey to win it..? part time against a host of ex league clubs and a 800 fan base..

i would say staying up shows how good the current management team are rather than how poor.. first season against a lot of full time teams where there are a handful of easy games, after the ryman where there are over 20.. this is canvey not carlisle..
