Gillingham

You are probably right, but that's what Scally said, however a lot of loyal fans brought season tickets in February and March knowing the club could go down, those i spoke to yesterday although gutted and upset said roll on August, if they start well and have a good season they will get 5000 to 7000 maybe more, i think the sponsorship with the main sponsor MHS is for two years.

They have never been able to fill Priesfield and they can't afford a new stadium whatever league they are playing in, but since Scally's plans have never included Gillingham paying for a new stadium I can't see that relegation will make any difference.

Possibly - but that doesn't make it any less amusing. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

As for their reduced income, this is from Kent Online:

"Central payments from the Coca-Cola League’s sponsorship and broadcasting pool drop from £750,000 to £350,000 now that Gillingham are members of League 1."

Can anyone see them really performing next year when they're going to have to really cut back the wages, and lose squad members? They're hardly an ambitious club- They've been relegated, the future of the squad's insecure, as is the future of the stadium, and the club's finances aren't brilliant. I can't see them being able to bring in good players in the situation they're in, and I can't see them coming back up at all, and isn't the current squad gettnig on a bit now with Danny spiller and Paul Smith etc?

There's some good teams in that division as well - presuming they fail in the play-offs, Tranmere, Brentford and Wednesday are no mugs, plus there'll be Forest, Bristol City, Barnsley and Huddersfield - most of them much bigger clubs than Gillingham.

I reckon Gills will go the way of most Championship relegated teams - Barnsley, Walsall, Bradford, Port Vale - and end up mid-table. Or do us a favour and do a Stockport/Bury/Grimsby.

The last five years the three teams that have fallen out year on year are as follows.

1999 - 2000

Walsall

Port Vale

Swindon

2000 - 2001

Huddersfield

Tranmere

QPR

2001 - 2002

Crewe

Barnsley

Stockport

2002 - 2003

Sheff Wed

Brighton

Grimsby

2003-2004

Walsall

Bradford

Wimbldon

So of those fifteen teams only one appears twice Walsall. Of the others 3 have bounced back and are still play div one football. Meanwhile that leaves 12 inclusive of Walsall that have fallen away to so far never return.

Reasons for this? Unknown. Personnally I think divs 2 and 3 are very similar so if you can do well in one you'll be alright in the other. Teams that come up from div three are on a sort of mission to the big time where as teams comming down are a bit dejected.

Let the Gills rot in that league for now until the whole stadium thing blows over then I couldn't care less what they do!

Personally I prefered it when it was Division One, Two, Three and Four. I'll never get used to Premiership, Championship, League One etc.

Maybe Scally will resign, now the Gills(and i'm not a gloater)are on their way down! I have nothing against Gillingham or their fans........As for their Chairman............

I agree. I sympathise for the hardy Gills fans, though I have no respect for Scally(wag)... He is only in it for the money, and now he is getting less, that makes me smile...!!!
Sorry Gills fans, hope you get a decent chairman once Scally realises he is flogging a dead horse and decides to leave you in the proverbial... Shame Ken Bates has already invested...!!!

Problem is Number 8, he got quite an ovation when he addressed the crowd before the Cardiff game on the 30th April, a lot of Gills fans remember where they were in 1995 and he came along and took the Club on, he may well be in it for the money i expect most Chairman and Directors are, i would expect your comments are only directed at him because of all this talk to move the Club to Ebbsfleet, i wonder what the thinking would be if there was no mention of any move.

I only worry what Fleet or Gills are up to, i have no time for any other teams, perhaps someone should complain about Charlton sending coaches to Maidstone, Ashford, Medway and Gravesham but really who cares.

Er, so because they're not very good at the moment they can't be considered 'ambitious'?

I always find it amusing that, in football, 'ambitious' (particularly in the NLP) always translates as 'has a lot of money'.

Obviously, since we're one of the poorer clubs in the Conference, Brian has no ambition. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

A good point J.C. but you could take it one step further...

Ambitious means spends a lot of money regardless of whether they actually have any. A willingness to recklessly gamble the future of the club on the slim chance that at some time in the future enough money might be won to save the club from its creditors.

Mepis, my dislike for Scally bares no relevance to the Ebsfleet project, why should it, I live in Maidstone, and in all honesty, I cannot see it happening... My dislike for him stems from his selfish personal financial gain from Gills FC. Most other chairman would be sympathetic to the fans and hold a level of regard and honour for his club, I see no evidence of this from Scally..
All he wants is to get rich and he cares not about the club as he strives to do so.. He will leave/sell up and run away soon, and I bet most Gills fans will be cursing him as the one who set the demise of a once great football club..!!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I cannot see Ebbsfleet going ahead, Gills fans will certainly react, perhaps even those that live in Gravesend, not sure on your comments about on his not caring for the Club and fans, he does not give that impression, he is probably in it for financial gain and he has stated that he will go in three to four years, i do not know him personally so i cannot really comment, still only time will tell and i hope your comments do not come true about the demise of a great football club, Kent has suffered to much over the last 15 years with the loss of Maidstone, Dartford etc, i know they have all come back but it takes ages to work your way back to where you were.

Not being funny like, but Gills have never been a 'great' club – they’ve spent most of their history in the lower reaches of Division Three South, Division Four etc.

Lower division outfit who've been punching above their weight for the past three or four season’s now - makes all the talk of super stadiums and casino’s all the more laughable.

A point emphasised time and time again. Scally declared he would leave 'once Gillingham are in their new home'. I think this could be translated as he will leave 'once he had trousered the cash from selling all the planned property in his Gillingham Village Project'.
