Have you accidentally pulled the cable out the back of the soundcard? And if so, have you plugged it into the mic or line-in socket by mistake?

Have you accidentally switched the speakers off?

Has the soundcard (or onboard chip) gone wrong?

Have you muted the volume? I think there's an icon in the taskbar if you're using Windows and I vaguely remember you can call up the volume control panel by double clicking it. Sometimes you may find that if you enable sound from one source (e.g. microphone) it automatically mutes some of the others -- I think that's something to do with stopping you getting feedback.

Are you only missing sound from one source? If you find you can't get audio CDs to play, can you hear them by plugging headphones into the front of the CD or DVD player?
