In the interests of fair play

Recommended Posts

I recently sent an email to both Chris Pond & Adam Holloway, asking for specific reponses to issues affecting the Fleet:

"Whilst many [Fleet supporters] have political views, independent of our love of the Fleet, we would all like to have definitive knowledge of your position on issues which could make or break our club at this time. I shall be publishing the results of this enquiry, regardless of my own strong political preference and wish to have unambiguous replies to four specific questions...

1. What is your position on the wish of Gravesend & Northfleet Football Club to build a new stadium in Gravesham, close to the Ebbsfleet development, which will give it the opportunity to expand as a full time football club & tap into the opportunities offered by the Thames Gateway expansion?

2. If you support this move, how would you do this?

3. What is your position on the wish of the Chairman of Gillingham Football Club to build a new stadium for his club in Gravesham, less than a mile from the new International Rail Station, thereby drawing into the opportunities of the Thames Gateway expansion?

4. If you have a definitive view on this proposal, how would you act?

Please answer each question individually and as clearly as possible..."

Unfortunately, I hadn't realized that the @parliament.uk email boxes of all sitting MPs are closed with the dissolution that precedes an election, so Chris Pond has not received this message & I have not been able to find an alternative address for him.

However, I have received a reply from Mr Holloway & whilst many of you will know I am a Labour supporter I feel it is only fair to publish the relevant parts here, as I said I would:

"Thanks very much for this email.

You want me to be unambiguous.....

1. I support the building of a new stadium.

2. I would support it by keeping the South East England Development Agency (and any European money) interested in the project and by using the position of MP to lobby the right people.

3. I think Gillingham should stay in Medway.

4. I would make sure that the wishes of the fans and management of your club were crystal clear to the local planning authorities, and make sure that the Conservative Group on Gravesham council were well aware of local views on this issue."

I cannot bring myself to vote Tory, but fair play to the bloke for his straightforward response. Unfortunately, the Conservatives on Gravesham Council, who represent my ward, did not have the courtesy to reply, like Mr Holloway has, when I contacted them last December.

I suspect Labour will be returned tomorrow & that Chris Pond will (probably) hang on to his seat. If so I shall be contacting him once his email address is up & running again & asking if he can give clear unambiguous replies to the same questions. When I contacted him before Christmas, my enquiry simply asked for his position. He had the courtesy to reply, but had not been put on the spot to be specific. This is what he said then:

"Thank you for your letter about Gravesend and Northfleet Football Club. As you may be aware, I have supported the Fleet's development plans for many years, including helping to raise funds for the ground improvements needed to help them move into the Conference League. I have also been discussing their plans for the future with Brian Kilcullen more recently and have offered my full support.

My view is that every major town or city needs its own football club, to share its name, to help put it - and keep it - on the map. It's for this reason that I have supported the Fleet..."

Here's hoping we have some good news soon. With any luck, we might not actually need to make whoever is elected live up to their promise to fight our corner.

It is a shame that the view of the Lib Dem candidate wasn't sought particularly as his address is given as being in Station Road Northfleet! kmj.

2 reasons why I didn't.

1. There's more chance of Chas Webster being elected Pope, when the present incumbent shuffles off this mortal coil, than of the Lib Dems capturing Gravesham tomorrow.

2. The bloke should really belong to the Luddite Party - he doesn't appear to have an email address.

I thanked Adam Holloway for his reply & he replied again, giving me an alternative address for Chris Pond, also stating that they correspond & are on good terms. Bloody Hell! What is the world coming to if we can't even trust our politicians to hate each other?

Anyone else see that Episode of The Simpsons? America is having is general elections, Clinton versus some other guy. Anyway some aliens land and in order to take the planet they kidnapp the candidates and disguise themselves as them, one is Clinton the other one is the other guy. That way which everone wins the aliens win.

The only way to go here is to vote for a third party candidate, thats the only way to get keep the aliens out.

The hollow candidate appears to living at the Conservative Club from the election details posted outside the Civic Centre. This seems to be a temporary abode. I wonder where he would actually live if elected? I mention this given that the last Conservative incumbent Jacques Arnold Arnold ( apparently so good they named him twice ) never lived in the Gravesham Constituency. If I remember correctly his special interest was South America.

I was seriously considered for the gig at the Vatican but was ultimately rejected on the grounds that I worship at the feet of Sir Steven of Portway.

As Chalky says, belay this talk of not being a HalfwayLiner - just consider me as being on loan over the other side at the moment doing important missionary work.

As Arnie said.........."I'LL BE BACK"!

Did you see the new mayor of Gravesham is Ray Parker, friend and fan of the Fleet who attended our meeting in the Social Club in December? We need to build links with this powerful ally.

Watching Darren Brown bang 14" nails up his nose at the Orchard last night was a bit like watching our end of season run in.................

Didn't Ray Parker sing Ghotsbusters? A true jack of all trades!

I saw Derren Brown a few weeks ago in Chatham. I liked the first half, the second not so much.
