Essex Senior League Cup Final

Regarding the game.An unfit Snowden ,as a replacement for the injured Gant ,was the reason why our defence (that has looked so solid for months),suddenly looked flat footed. This is not a criticism of Stuart, its just not the sort of game in which to make a full comeback after missing most of the season. We havn't looked vunerable to the ball over the top for ages.It wansn't a pleasant 'step back in time'.

Well I must say the standard of refs this year has been appalling. And how do the league sort it out? Ask us to take our posts on this site down. I know our bench has been reported on more than one occassion! However I do remember your 1-0 victory over us and the ref being so one sided for you. I haven't got anything but praise for Mr Whitton. Every game he has been ref for us he has been excellent. Having said that I wasn't at the game so I'm not taking sides. On the subject of bad refs I thought our one was ok on sat but we had a deaf linesman who was appalling. Anyone else had him? Wouldn't answer our questions or couldn't hear us apparently but certainly heard some so called abuse aimed at him!

Kevin Riley produced the foul of the season, two yards away from the defender behind him and heading away with the ball towards our goal the ref blew and gave abbey a free kick.

Abbey player blocks a cross with his hands all we get is a free kick and the defender gets away witn no booking.

After the penalty was scored Chopper kicks the ball towards the centre and it clips an Abbey player on the leg who with out breaking stride along with two team-mates attack Chopper, obvious booking for Chopper!!!!!

A clear elbow into Paul Campbell's head received a booking when it was violent conduct.

Abbey player dives down in box Asa unhappy and goes to tell him to get up so Abbey captain raises his hands and grabs Asa, so ref books Asa.

Typical that when we can get promoted so does this poor excuse of a ref.

I felt Waltham Abbey were definitely the better side on the day, the Town defenders couldn't cope with their pace up front. TheAbbey striker was obviously offside in the build-up to the penalty - although Abbey were well on top at this stage anyway and it was hard to see Town getting back into the game.

The few Town fans and players giving the officials abuse at the end was unnecessary, sure there were some awful decisions but it was obvious which team deserved to win on the day, it's a shame that a certain member of the Town management team thought that it was entirely down to the ref, rather than admit that perhaps they'd got it worng with the team selection- I mean Gant and Negus on the bench for example.

Talking of 4th officials, the one at our Thameside Final yesterday was involved in a funny moment.

We were 4 mins into injury time at the end of the game, when he suddenley realised he had not taken his big opportunity to put a baord up with no of mins injury time on.

So he hastily puit up a baord with 1 on it. Did he mean 1 from the start or 4 + 1 = 5???????????

You might be right about the better team winning on the day but it is not the ref's job to see that they do.

But what would have happened if our "goal" in the first half had been allowed.

What would have been the result if, when Rudi was brought down in the box, the ref had given a penalty.

And what would have happened if the incident leading up to the penalty, which you accept was offside and led to Graham Hall getting his marching orders had been correctly called.

None of us know but it is my view that the ref had a nightmare and I think the bookings count bears me out. I cannot recall Andy ever being booked and he will correct me if I am wrong. But I have seen him badly fouled and not retaliate and whilst he hates conceding goals he will acept that it occasionally does happen.

BTW the first Abbey booking can consider himself hard done by as by then Paul Cambell had determined how to con the ref. Roll over and shout in pain.

I don't see how you can say that MK.The first half was very even.Town were on top for the first 25 minutes of the second half.Abbey scored their second goal well aginst the run of play. Yes,Abbey stretched Towns defence after that, as Town were forced to take risks, but the decision-making of a certain individual DID distort what could have been a good contest.
Penn was clearly fouled in the Abbey box at 1-1,as the Town players stopped to protest to Whitton,Abbey broke the lengh of the pitch and scored.Nothing needs to be added to the sending off/penalty award for the third goal.

So even though Town played poorly. If the major decisions had gone our way,the scorline could easily have been reversed.

You're right LS, the first half and the next 15 minutes of the second were even, but once Abbey got their second they took control, and it never looked like you would score. Even if Hall had stayed on the pitch and the penalty hadn't been given you would still be 2-1 down. To suggest that Waltham Abbey only won because of some dodgy refereeing decisions is very unfair, they look a very useful team, far better than a lot of the teams I've seen this season in the Ryman.

It's too easy to blame the ref, rather than consider whether perhaps on the day you just didn't play well enough. If you go through your team man for man how many can you honestly say had a good game? i can think of at least 4 Abbey players who stood out, and only 1 Town player. 4-1 , which incidentally also...

I have read everyones views regarding yesterdays game and it has taken the majority of the day for someone to have spoken some sense on this forum reflectiong game. i for one am not going to comment as i believe MK James has summed it up.

Although i must admit i have had a few chuckles, the excuses are getting worse and worse!!
