matchday programes!

At risk of repeating what I said earlier (I did contribute to the earlier discussion...) I don't think the programme's bad in terms of articles - it's certainly comparable with others at the saame and a higher level, and was voted best in the Ryman League last year. What it's clearly missing are the stats - not just tables - though of course they should be in - but appearances, goals, recent results, goalscorers through the division, all that stuff. Should be 1 or 2 pages of that, and much is accessible from the local press, or downloadable from web sites. I hear what you say about copyright, but everyone else seems to manage it.

Hi fqt.

John Gibson is the Chairman of The Club. In my experience, he is a very approachable chap. However, according to the matchday programme, the 'committee' responsible for the matchday programme is Nick Crowther, Steve Eames and Lee Wood and, in my view, any discussion concerning the content of the programme should take place with those three in the first instance.

Oh, by the way. I.5 hours per programme to update the League table strikes me as a trifle pessimistic, unless you are doing each one by hand. Or, unless you are being paid by the hour. Are you a solicitor by any chance?

Talking of The Committe, Hi HBEE.

So. We will have to agree to disagree about the quality of the content of the current programme. As you are on the Committee, I assume that the various ideas of player interviews/profiles, director interviews/profiles, backroom person interviews/profiles, commercial page, quiz, archive stuff, match reports etc. have been considered but rejected.

Your message is slightly ambiguous concerning a League table and stats. Are you doing it? Do you need assistance? Ever thought about a career in the Civil Service?

Keep up the good work HBEE [and the programme].

You must have heard it, mde, but I'll repeat the abridged version:

A retired solicitor passes away and is met by St Peter at The Pearly Gates.

"How old are you, my son?", says St. Peter.

"73, your Holiness", replies the solicitor.

"That's strange", says St Peter, consulting a rather large volume, "according to your billing figures, you're 112".

A true story:

The son of someone I know pretty well had a mind to study to become a Lawyer. Father and son went to the open day at a Uni and the Head of Law Faculty opened his address with the words "Why do you want to be a solicitor?". The father, who has his own sense of humour, suggested to his son that he should reply: "In order to do very little work and make loads of money."

AFF, thanks for that.

Personally I think it's good that views about the programme are aired on the message board. It's exactly what these sorts of boards should be used for. For what it's worth, the term committee might be a bit misleading. There are no clandestine meetings of the three of us, rather Steve and I pitch our articles to Lee and he puts them together as the finished article. From what I understand about publishing generally, there have to be certain numbers of ads to editiorial to make ends meet, but there is usually some flexibility. But suggestions for significant changes or material additions will have to go to the Chairman. More editrorial probably = less ads and that probably means less money. I said above that I'd love to see more stats, but it's not Steve's or my decision to make. I'll raise it, though.

Look the point is the suggested articles do not mean you have to up the size to 48pgs..

as the way the editorial is laid out you can drive a bus through some of the space...less leading, lock to baseline, drop cap anyone?

as for

>>views about the programme are aired on the message board. It's exactly what these sorts of boards should be used for. <<

Who made you chief bottle washer- upper, these boards should be used for whatever message you wish to say. Its called freedom of speech. Yes a lot of nonsense is written (myself included) but try and take it with a large grain of salt

Right I'm off for some Pimms and Pernod as Mr.Sun has a rather fetching Deerstalker( Paul & Shark of course) on today

Hi HBEE. Thanks to you, too.

Setting on one side, for a moment, the questions of manpower, time etc., you have a number of suggestions on here for additional items for the matchday programme, which, I believe, will make the thing a more interesting read and better value for money.

As far as the current content is concerned, I find the page from the Duo to be too long generally, and limited in content to the last couple of matches. The Captain's page is , I suggest, too long in its current form and largely a repetition of The Duos' page, albeit from a different persons perspective. Park Life is 'witty and gossipy' but often thin. On those days when Steve's creative juices are exhausted, something else could be inserted. A quiz, perhaps.

Turning to advertising, I certainly don't want to see commercial income reduced. I assume we are obliged to carry advertisements for Ryman and the match balls for example, for free, but at other clubs, and indeed at ours in the past, those ads have been half page rather than full page. If someone other than The Chairman tells you that they must be full page ads, check.

Oh, by the way. Just tell the Chairman that you are going to introduce a few small changes, by popular request. Don't go into detail. He'll trust you. It will be alright. It's not the Blair Government, you know.

Always pleased to assist.
