Worthing 1-1 Billericay

Recommended Posts

Bit of a curate's egg of a performance this one, with good bits and bad bits. Same starting XI as at Hampton, and again we started pretty well. Took the lead with a Paul Armstrong free kick.

Saps was taken off just before half time as a precaution after he tweaked a hamstring, and we reorganised with Oxby coming into midfield, Game going to right back and Macca to centre back.

Second half we never really got going, lost our shape in midfield and we were very static up front. Worthing came at us and got a deserved equaliser, and forced us to defend for much of the half. We finished quite strongly, couple of late chances but a draw was a fair result imho.

Capleton McSweeney Price Sappleton (Oxby) Trott Forbes Game Hunter Elder Armstrong Cousins

Subs not used: Kerrigan, Sterling, Wareham, Gothard

My motm was Trotty who did very well when we were under pressure second half.

Oh and well done to Macca who made his 50th appearance of the season last night. Only missed one game all season (Dover away). Top stuff from a player who has been one of our most consistant performers all season. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/applaus.gif" alt="" />

A typical game of two halves, but both were considerably better than the new lodge fixture a few weeks ago.

We started well and deserved our half time lead, nice free kick over the wall from Paul Armstrong, their keeper saved well from Cuzz from another free kick and Mel made a good save towards the end of the half.

Agree with Simes that the change changed the match. Matty Game went to right back and aquitted himself well. But in the second half the new midfield trio just weren't upto it for whatever reason although they didnt get much help from Cuzz or Armstrong either. Worthing had the better of it in the second half and deserved their goal. We had a couple of half chances in the final 10 but overall I think we have to be happy with a point.

I felt we had a few players coasting in the second half and that is a shame as it now means we cant really afford to rest anyone on Saturday. If we are to progress through the play-offs we need more of first half and less of second half please.

Good away support last night too I thought.

Another case of the 'travelling blues'. We have not played well in the league when we have travelled a fair distance this season. It was just like Salisbury, wet and miserable and the team never really got into gear.

Midfield didn't really get into the match, Leon having one of his rare off games this season. Forbes was the usual Forbes and then we missed Game when he went into defence.

Thought Nathan also had an off night and Cuzz was asleep for most of the match. Disagree with jl, thought Armstrong battled away as usual, having to play deep to help out the midfield. Also he got no support from the officials as their no 3 was kicking two sh*ts out of him.

Back ok, Trottie stepped up in the second half and really did try and inspire the team but it was one of those nights.

Would agree with most of what was said last night and on this board but (and here is the sting in my tail), we got a draw. There have been times when we buckled under the pressure and we didn't. The turning point was definately when Matt Game went back into the right back postion to re jig the defence when Sapps got substitued. Trotty was inspirational all through the second half. We also stopped putting the ball wide and insisted to bang the ball down the middle and their two full backs were lapping it up, with Nathan struggling on his own against them.

Worthing were fast on the counter and caused us problems BUT like I said, there have been times when we have buckled and we didn't.

I would also agree that certain players went missing (again) and I know it isn't policy to name names but in this instance I will (and open myself up for criticism from certain people). Mr. Forbes, a talented and inspirational player that all the youngsters look towards but lets himself (and the team down) with a lack of effort. When he plays we are unstoppable, Leon has the time and space to be creative (which is missed when he is charging about the pitch trying to be Captain Marvel and plug all the gaps in the midfield), Matt Game has a chance to stay on the right and Dormer / Cuz can do the same on the left). What a difference the team would be if he could live up to the youngsters requirement for leadership from an older player, especially now, when, with the pressure of the play off's, his experience, effort and talent is a nessessity. My message to Steve Forbes is, the team needs you to step up, play and lead. Every player, supporter, member of this club wants to see what you can do. Please don't disappoint.
