The ref cost us this one ......I'm still not over it

Saturday 14 September

Chaddesley Corbett FC 0-1 Blackheath Town

Ten man Chaddesley lost their first match of the season in a hard fought encounter with Blackheath. The match was spoilt, and ultimately decided, by some diabolical refereeing that left the Blackheath players laughing. Fortunately other results went Chaddesley's way and left the team in second place in the league on goal difference.

Chaddesley were forced to make changes from the team that beat Malvern Rangers, with Alex Taffe unavailable, and injuries to Alex Kilgour and Ashley Phillips. However Gavin Knight returned from injury and the enthusiastic Russell Wright replaced Taffe.

The first half was dominated by Chaddesley, with Wright and Craig Pratt creating chances in attack. Richard and Brian Burton also caused the Blackheath team several problems on the left, whilst Joss Price, Drew Armstrong and Matt Baynton never looked in trouble against a strong Blackheath attack. With Gavin Knight dominating the right, Chaddesley were unlucky not to score, creating almost incessant pressure. Several Chaddesley set pieces caused Blackheath problems, with Armstrong and Price in particular going close.

Chaddesley started the second half brightly, but a combination of injuries and terrible refereeing turned the game. Wright was forced off with an injury, and replaced by Derek Westcott. Then in the 54th minute, Blackheath's Lee Wright took Ian Vogel's legs in the penalty box, and subsequently knocked the ball out of play. To the disbelief of all watching, including the Blackheath defence, not only was a penalty not awarded, but neither was a Chaddesley corner given. Whilst this incident was still being debated, Blackheath took the goalkick to their right. The ball was centered, causing confusion in the Chaddesley defence, which for once failed to clear. Blackheath's Stephen Manley reacted first, drilling past the helpless Gareth Yarsley to make it 1-0.

Chaddesley reacted well and took the game to Blackheath. Manager Martin Westcott changed the formation to 3-5-2, and this further increased the pressure, but Blackheath's man of the match, keeper Ricky McNamara, held firm. Then on 65 minutes, Richard Burton was sent off for a late challenge that earnt him a second yellow card. However undeterred, 10 men Chaddesley continued to press forward. Craig Pratt had a goal disallowed for offside following an Andy Shuck flick. They then played 3 attackers for the last 15 minutes, with Moule replacing Shuck. Blackheath also threatened too, with Phillip Mills causing problems in the last 10 minutes, whilst Chaddesley put everything into attack. However neither side could add to the score with Blackheath eventually taking the 3 points to win 1-0.
