Gate 361

On 2 minutes Dean Nyman was making towns first attack down his usual wing, he was clearly fouled but made his pass across the goal for Matty Negus to tuck home 1 – 0. NO free kick to town ref blew his whistle as the ball got to Matty. Can’t have town scoring on the first attack that would never do!

Lee Smith was soon into his stride shooting to Keeper. Dean Green was running down the wing and causing all sorts of problems for the defence. Adam Gant was tackling back with wonderful skill to snuff out the advancing Burnham. Lee Smith headed just over the bar and had another shot go just wide. On the 13th minute Russell Penn Made a lovely cross for Dean Nyman to nail just inside the post with a fantastic header. 0 – 1. Rudi Hall was inspired as he set Dean Nyman off running, which the keeper saved. Rudi was starting to party with an n overhead kick going just wide. A Dean Green Shot was just blocked. An uncharacteristic Steve Baldwin mistake let Burnham have a shot on goal which Chopper saved. A Burnham mistake sets Paul Campbell off and running with some lovely little touches. Graeme Hall was booked after one too many fouls. Steve Portway had his best chance of the match with a dipping shot just over the bar. Dean Nyman had a long shot go just wide. Dean Green was brought down in the box surely a penalty to Town. NO not according to Mr Pratt. Fans responded there’s only one ….. in Burnham. Dean Green headed wide. Here endeth the first half with Town well in control.

Second half Burnham had to come out and take risks. The first was a clatter of bodies in the Town box with Burnham screaming for a penalty more in desperation than expectation. Dean Nyman took a knock in the first half which he had not been able to run off so Kevin Riley cam on for him! Lee Smith headed wide again. The ball came in for Kevin Riley and a defender to head, both went up for it possibly Kevin headed it onto the defender creating a deflection that beat the small goalie! 0 -2.

OK 2- 0 up time to play keep ball and put this game to sleep which town did with excellent effect. Chants went round the Ground of “Are you watching Dave McDonald.”

Of Course he wasn’t he wasn’t there! Some frustration started to boil over for Burnham and a few minor knocks and tussles took place. Rudi was booked after a free kick was kicked against him. This was Rudi’s second yellow so he had to walk. Dean Green was booked. Looked like Lee Smith was also booked possibly for disagreeing with the ref. The fans sung “You’ll Never walk alone” and all the usual songs. For the last 15 minutes of the game town fans just celebrated as Burnham didn’t look like a team about to score. On the final whistle the fans and players just erupted with sheer joy and relief. The fans applauded the players and the players returned the adoration. Les Gold had a sign proclaiming the champions and Town fans just partied. Long may it continue. I’m off for a drink now!

Burnham looked more like a top 6 or 7 side than championship contenders. The addition of a quality goalscorer this season has obviously been very beneficial to them.It was a good atmosphere yesterday and the Burnham management and fans took the defeat with good grace.(something one or two other ESL clubs would have found hard to do).

Poor refereeing threatened to distort the outcome, but thankfully we managed to ride it out.

Also, you've got to admire the old campaigner Portway. All his experience came to the fore.He managed a dilberate handball,a stamp all over Dean Greens back,he trod on Rileys toes at a free kick, produced a knee high tackle on Greame Hall,AND was constantly in the ear of the ref for the whole 90 minutes WITHOUT getting booked.Respect to that man !! To be fair to Portway,he took the all the stick from the crowd with good grace and kept a smile on his face.

Well done Town. Great performance. Let's hope common sense prevails and promotion is automatic.

Not sure if the occasion got to him but the referee had an awful game. Made some truly bizarre decisions. Fortunately it didn't affect the outcome.

BTW, was the police presence really necessary? Three squad cars and seven coppers was OTT. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/police.gif" alt="" />
