manager/coach

Recommended Posts

If you think about it logically, managers should manage the club(not only first team) be in charge of all coaching staff with all teams and direct them accordingly. Then coach should deliver coaching sessions, speak with players and pick the team correct?

Good point, so in general if roles are agreed before season everyone then sticks to that role. With team selection, imagine doing a halftime team talk to players who you dont feel should be playing! sureley their is sometimes when manager and coach disagree .How do you get around it?

I would say both need to learn to agree to disagree but if coaches work in training on sessions and are hands on with players in terms of confidence, attitude i still think coaches should have more sway than managers and i think good managers would understand this. That is not to say if someone does it differently than i am suggesting it would make them a bad manager.

totally agree with you mate!also i have to say the manager figure is an english institution.anywhere else there is a coach,an assistant coach,a fitness trainer, and what they call a l'anglaise Team Manager, that deal with contracts and the logistic side of things.i have never seen someone that coach the team and is not allowed to pick the team.it doesn't make sense, although it is a team work these days and how we say in my country? four eyes see better than two or too many people playing the gallant you will never see the daybreak! capito,my friends...

If you think about it a managers job is a very busy one even at esl level. If you could work with a coach that has no desire to steal your job why would you not trust them to take the lead with the playing/training side of the first team and then leaise with them regarding reserve and youth team matters?

from my experience of working as a coach or manager in this country i can say the only time i worked with someone else in running a first team or a reserves side has been an enjoyable experience mostly because there was mutual respect for each other role and everything was done to the benefit of the players and the team ,looking to complement each other and utilising our strenghts to the maximum.it definitely works if you put your ego's aside.

Great question,a director of football would run a football club from top to bottom as a manager would. From staff/player recruitement, contracts youth development, scouting the whole lot. Then if he is doing his job properly, would leave first team matters, playing style, tactics, training, team picking, speaking to players, down to the coach. He would also manage the coaching staff,so eveyone is answerable to someone, and report regulary to the committee. This could work at esl level but as someone (coach 64 i think,) most correctly stated egos do get in the way and for some reason coaches who do their job well think that the next step is management.Wrong,i think it is coaching at a better level!

Replying to zody`s post,Not too much, however they exist at our level and sometimes people are threatend by others who are maybe more knowledgeable. If i managed and my coach was clearly more capeable than me i would use it to my advantage and give him his head(give him freedom to make decisions.)

Sorry no way the manager picks the team not the coach, the manager would let his/her coach have an input into team selection but you will never agree totally on this,if the coach picks the team then why do you need a manager, what to make the phone calls, sort out the training facilities, pay the wages each week,at esl level the manager should run the football club from top to bottom including all youth sides, the clubs coaches should bring the youth forward through the ranks of the club hopefully bringing some players into the 1st team set up,as i have said before some coaches think they would be good managers but that has been proved to be not the case
