Start to Finish

There's a series of gigs being put on at the Barbican this September where bands pick on of their albums and play the album live from start to finish in the correct order. Hopefully the bands will add to the orgininals and not produce exact carbon copies. But if you could pick one band to play one album what would you pick?

I was thinking "Pure Phase" by Spiritualized, because I haven't seen them play certain tracks on there before (The slide song, spread your wings, Feel like going home etc), and I think it'd work really well, especially the way the album just flows together - man!

My favourite Spiritualized track is 'Out of Sight' I reckon with the right instrumental back up it would sound awesome live.

I think it's a bit odd that, shouldn't live gigs be different to album line ups??

I would like to see I am Kloot do 'Natural History' in straight tracks or maybe SFA doing Radiator all the way through, you've got a pick an album with no bad or filler tracks, that's a tough call.

Depends whether you consider an album a 'work of art' or not.

After all, the very first "gigs", 300 years ago when orchestras would perform classical pieces, were played straight through, same as they would be on an 'album', if there were such a thing back then.

You'd go and watch a performance of Beethoven's 5th Symphony all the way through, so why not Sgt Pepper or OK Computer??

I suppose of the good things about going to gigs is that you don't know what the band is going to play next, but sometimes it is fustrating if they don't play one of your favourite tunes. I really like "The Cult" and I've never seen them play "Bad Fun" from the Electric album - and I'd love to see that.

If a band just stood there and played note-for-note every song then it'd be a wasted opportunity. It'd be good to hear a revised, up-dated take on those songs. Belle and Sebastian are doing "If you're feeling sinster", and I would have loved to see that - I tried to get tickets but it's already sold out!

Soul Kiss (Glide Divine) by Spectrum is another album I'd love top see played live. It would have to be played in a venu with seats though, it's just so mellow.
