Yeah but how many of these newspapers are bought outside the Southend area? I think paper sales means more to them, they are after all a business. West Ham would have tens of thousands of followers in the Echo's coverage area. Was there much in the Echo on Arsenal? It was my experience while employed in Billericay that there were more locals professing to be Arsenal fans than showing much interest in Billericay. Dissapointing that perhaps, but my observation all the same. I reckon the Chronicle and Billericay Gazette are the truly local papers for you and thats where you should find the good stuff on Ricay. You are in a fringe fringe area for the Echo despite the so-called Basildon edition. As I recall it they don't even offer it up the road from you in Brentwood.

Ryan, I hope that helps you through your puzzlement on this matter.

I think for the next season we have to develop the Gazzette to carry more 'Ricay news and cut the Echo out. Dick Marshall has been more visible at New Lodge this season but he is guided by his editors and therefore his "focus" has been Canvey...

BBC Essex are willing to do more and carry more radio coverage, especially if we get promoted. I haven't spoken to Graham at BBC for a little while but I'll give him a call to find a way forward to promote the club more...See if we can develop a closer relationship as we promised to do this season (no fault of Graham or BBC Essex - Jan through to March was pretty tough for me for personal reasons and I must admit, I lost a bit of focus as to some of the tasks I said I'll do).

Time to lay the plans for next season and push for greater rewards and success!!!

OZ, as you no billericay is the 2nd largest town in basildon district and hardly on the fringe of there coverage. until recent, the echo coverage has been good for BTFC as we were one of the major teams they covered. Our coverage nowadays is poor but it dioes come down to the ricay/canvey thing. they have major coverage we dont

I think the Echo's coverage of Basildon generally is on the wane, last time I bought it, the paper as a whole seemed a little thin, and gave us precious little coverage.

What happened on Tuesday was that Dick Marshall went to watch C*nv*y, whilst Chris Philips went to Macclesfield to watch Southend... consequently once again there was no reporter at New Lodge. I got phoned up by Chris Tuesday lunchtime, whilest I was in the pub natch, and agreed that he would call me after the final whistle and I would relay the details to him over the phone, which I did....

The only bona fide journalist at the game, so far as I am aware, was Gary Haines of the Romford Recorder, who was watching his last Billericay game before starting work at Charlton Ath.
