people were trying to tell me before the game he was the best the league had to offer.

On a serious note, as always. Where did the gentlemen's agreement come from that the referee 'must' stop the game every time a player goes down injured? I can understand the 'head injury' agreement, but it does slow the game down and cause some teams to lose an advantage if the ref stops the game just because of an injury.

Case in point. A Basildon player went down in our box, we won the ball and played it upfield to Lee Smith who was in the opponents half. The ref stops the game!

When I played and refereed we got on with it.

Yes, common sense seems to gone out of the window. I wonder if there is a fear of litigation behind it all, as with so much in life these days?

Obviously safety always has to come first, and of course the game must stop if there appears to be a head injury - or if a player is lying with a leg bent at right angles or something - but are refs afraid that if they assume that a player has only a minor injury and play on, then it turns out that the injury is far more serious, they might be sued?

Then do what they do in rugby. Treat the player for certain injuries whilst the game carries on.

I didn't look to sue the referee when I broke my leg.

He came across and asked if I was all right?

I told him that I had broken my leg!

He said, 'how do you know'?

I said, 'look for yourself'.

His reply. Oh bl..dy hell!

This is it Andy. Once upon a time (in our day!) there was such a thing as an accident. Now everything has to be someone's fault and the claims solicitors are on to it like vultures. People are also Health and Safety mad, but worrying about the appearance without thinking about the real issues - like demanding all sorts of brightly coloured saftey kit, boots and hats when it it isn't necessary at all.

Not sure how you can treat injuries with the game going on around you. What's wrog with the old system where injuries are treated when the ball next goes out of play?

There is a genuine problem about moving a player. I was reffing when all this fuss first came in, and the badgs and blazers decreed that a player should be ordered to leave the field to be treated. Not on your nelly old son, we collectively replied, that is just asking for litigation! Plus what's more to the point it could result in a serious aggravation to a genuine injury, and anyway it's quicker to just apply the magic sponge and get on with it.

This all seems to have led to the ludicrous situation now where a player is treated on the pitch then has to leave it, to re-enter at the halfway line. What a total farce!
