Andy's Testimonial

Recommended Posts

Portway still playing last season:

In the Eastway Essex Senior League, Southend Manor moved close to unbeaten leaders Waltham Abbey and consolidated their position in second place when they beat London APSA at Aveley by 4-1. Hodges, Jay, Kemp and Cheesewright scored for the visitors whilst Shah replied for the hosts. Enfield beat Brentwood Town at home by 1-0 with a goal from Negus.

Burnham Ramblers were leading 3-0 at half-time at home to Bowers & Pitsea with goals from Holmes and a Steve Portway double but proceeded to throw it away in the second half. Reeve scored a hat trick for the visitors, which included two penalty conversions late on.

The latest name to be added to those taking part in this spectacular is a young lad going by the name of Portway.

If that doesn't convince Bill Kent to pop down, nothing will.

Interesting, of course, that Ports has nothing to do with Andy Ford's managerial reign whatsoever... not that I'm complaining.

I'm sure Ports played under Andy for a while. Ford brought him back but let him go again.

Can anyone confirm?

Er, yes, you're right - he was there at the beginning of the 1998/1999 season according to an old programme I've just dug out.

His glory years were under Aldous though

Why on earth is the club holding a testimonial match for a full-time member of staff?

Erm... he was full-time for all of five months out of nearly eight years, and spent more than six years attending matches, scouting, working behind the scenes, etc etc, far beyond the call of duty.

And don't professional players have testimonials too...? If this is anyone's reason for not going on Tuesday week, it's a pretty weak excuse.
