Eastbourne Today

I have to admit that with mixed feelings about today it turned out to be quite a memorable trip.

It was a glorious sunny day when the teams ran out, and it was very pleasing to see them run out together and not by team. The referee called the teams to order and a minute's silence was held in honour of Paul Sykes. The teams formed two semi-circles around the centre circle, and the officials were also there to almost close the circle. The referee blew his whistle, and an immediate and complete silence descended on the ground, which endured for the entire time with only two exceptions, the gurgling of a little baby, and then, about 30 seconds in, the single piping song of a bird, which could be heard in total clarity lifting up above the pitch. It was a minute that was extremely moving, and solemn, but beautiful.

I'll give an account of the game, if anyone wants one, later in another post.
