Essex Senior League Cup - Final

Recommended Posts

and it almost stopped me supping my pint for a while.............the gleam of the 20p piece as it rose majestically into the air before flipping over with the grace of a beached whale before coming to rest on the back of the League Chairmans hand, that tingling moment of suspense as the right hand was lifted to reveal.............tails!!!!

Toss ups are very interesting and very important. It is particularly interesting that a 20p was used, and that it was caught. Any club captains or refs reading this, what is normal practice when tossing for kick-off/ends these days, or does it vary?

When I was a humble class 3 (as they were then) ref, I used to ask te skipper to call while the coin was in the air but let it fall to the ground. This avoids any hint of cheating and any embarrassment if you miss it or drop it, and as far as I know was what most refs did. I can't remember if I asked the home or away skipper to call.

Like many other refs I didn't use an ordinary coin, I kept a special one. At first I used an Italian coin, can't remember how many thousands of lira it was, about the size of a two bob bit. Then I decided that a an actual florin (a two bob bit, that is two shillings, you youngsters) was my lucky coin - refs are often as superstitious as players. This was obviously way past decimalisation, it was an old coin! I kept the lira thing in my pocket as a spare (always be prepared!)

Did you know that when tossing up for a penalty shoot out, the winner does not have any choice but has to go first?

So you see toss-ups are very interesting indeed.

Ive always maintained the premise that even though you pass the course it don't make you a good ref......same as buying a pair of Predators wouldnt make you play like Beckham would they!

Father Jack, your quite right I should have closed the fists, and I wondered why it always blew away...silly me.

From the start of this season the winner does now have the choice on going first or second. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/argue.gif" alt="" />
