Anyway if anyone else is making the long trecherous journey down then good luck and I'll see you there.

I don’t think it is a necessity to have a University to be a city! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" />

It's just a cathedral isn't it? What about a wall round the town (an old one that is like at Canterbury)?

I thought you had to apply every few years or so to retain city status. I heard that Rochester wasn't a city a few years back because they failed to apply, but I don't know how true that is. A Cathedral certainly used to be a prerequisite for being a city anyway, a university not so (York, for example, was a city long before education existed)

To be a city you have to have a cathedral, unless you're one of those new-fangled modern cities whose status has been bestowed by the queen for political reasons - such as Sunderland. Having a university doesn't count one way or the other.

Found this:

"City Status within the United Kingdom is a purely honorific title granted as a mark of distinction by personal Command of the Queen, on the advice of Her Ministers. Most recently, as part of Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, cities throughout the UK were encouraged to enter a national competition to be granted Jubilee City Status. No specific criteria were required for entry, as each application made by each individual local authority was considered on merit.

To qualify for this honour cities were to have several notable features, which could be considered regionally or nationally significant, such as a certain feature noted for its special character or the fact that the city may be considered a centre for industry, commerce, the arts, etc. Another factor for consideration was whether a city had a particular historical or royal connection. Most importantly, however, those cities short-listed were to have a forward thinking attitude to both their continued expansion and their sense of community. Those cities that lodged successful applications were announced in March 2002, these were Preston, Newport, Stirling, Lisburn and Newry.

Brighton & Hove, Inverness and Wolverhampton were granted city status as part of the Millennium celebrations."
