Poor officials or am I just biased

Over the past few years I have had this continuous thought that the standard of officials, especially refs has been getting worse.

But then in the cold light of day (not watching a match)I think that this cannot be so because these officials have passed the required exams, most are experianced and although it may seem like it they don't hold a grudge against your team.

So I have tended to put it down to, in the heat of the moment, being biased towards my team.

And then something happens that seems to vindicate my feeling - along comes a ref like the one last night who just couldn't see the blatently obvious i.e. three handballs, none given, continously blowing for fouls (mostly against slough) when myself and the people who I'm standing with can't see why.

Or am I just being biased?

There were two incidents last night which were really bad, both in the second half down by either corner flag Staines were defending.

The first was a Staines defender trying to kick it off Leigh Mason. It clearly missed, not even close, and they gave it to Staines. The other was Mason passing to Steer or Murphy. The ball clearly clipped Steer/Murphy's calf as Mason was tackled, yet we got the throw in.

Seems as though the referee's we've had in Staines matches are very happy with them to be overly physical in their football and get away with it.

That said, I think officials have been much less of a talking point this season and usually that means they've had sound games. There's only been the odd exception (Alison Chapman springs to mind) where I don't think the referee has had a decent match, but you're never going to please every supporter in there.

I used to get so wound up at referees whilst watching Slough in the late 80's, early 90's that I signed up and took the referees exams. I then referreed locally for about 3 years. Didn't help in the slightest. I still shout at referees, so can only think that there is a large element of bias involved. What annoyed me about the referee last night was that he made Slough take every throw-in, every free kick, from a precise spot, but no such sanction was applied to Staines. They could steal yards at every kick and throw.

All I can add was that whilst I was refereeing, I didn't once have any feeling that I was favouring one side over another, so guess that all the officials we get probably feel the same?

People moan about refs to much...and at lot is to do with bias, and taking frustration out on someone.

I've watched quite a few games as a neutral this year, and especially at Lewes when my mates scream for a foul/penalty etc i think the ref has got it right and waved things on.

Infact i find ref moaning quite boring. Rather save my shouting to encourage the team.
