Well, not if they started from Enfield, which is at about the northernmost point of the M25 (J21-22 being the furthest north). Basildon is more southerly than Enfield.

 

However, the statement is perfectly correct, as a generalisation. It does get colder the further north you go. The statement quoted was not that the party was travelling north or that they were getting colder, merely an observation that climate deteriorates with lattitude.

You said you were on the M25. That is a roundabout!
