Southbury Road...

Recommended Posts

...I don't suppose anyone has photo's of Enfield's old Southbury Road? I'm more interested in when Saracens (scum) shared with us, and installed the stand opposite our original mainstand. Can't really remember what the ground looked like... just remember when they tore it down, and nothing new was built on it. :-(

No real reason for wanting the photo's, just feeling a bit nostalgic.

Come on you Towners, we're going up.

It was just flat tarmac, if memory serves. Not, it must be said, laid by sarascum, who just left a pile of debris and "hardcore" after demolishing our magnificent terracing and covered stand. Well, terrace and cover, anyway! I believe the tarmac was laid by volunteer supporters in a hurry to avoid the Isthmian League getting snotty and downgrading the stadium.

You'd think there'd have been a watertight binding contract about the groundshare and alterations to the fabric, wouldn't you, especially if the deal was reneged on halfway through.............oh well all water that's been passed under the bridge now.

The only contract was between lazarou and nigel wray. Laz claimed he didn't get a bean from saracens ,But I would put money on laz sticking what wray gave him in his own pocket. If somebody owed me a large sum of cash I would want to embarrass the guy who welched on the deal but I'm afraid laz allowed things to quieten down all too easily for my liking.

I think that, at the point Laz decided he could deal with one of the biggest property developers in the country without the benefit of adequate legal advice or a contract he was always going to be stuffed.

Some figures about the value of Saracens to EFC were given at an open session in the bar one evening I recall. The trouble was it was quite apparent that supporters weren't being told the truth. The bar takings were woefully understated. I think we can guess where the money went.

Not a bad shout there.

Well, yes, at the time I heard a rumour from someone in a position to gather and spread rumours, that a metaphorical brown envelope had allegedly changed hands (winks and touches side of nose).

I would also be prepared to believe the alternative that a combination of arrogance and incompetence led to the situation.

Yet again, a combination of the above would not surprise me either.
