Yesterdays game. A sensible oppinion

It seems everyone is blaming the ref for our loss yesterday. From what I saw he was dishing out the punishment for both sides. The Boro fans were jeering him throughout the game as much as we were. The fact of the matter is we had very little attempts on goal and only a couple on target. We looked good on the build up but seriously lacked in the finishing. We can't blame the ref for that. Let's stop slagging opposition fans and blaming Refs for our shortcomings or we will soon become a laughing stock in this league. You also can't blame the ref for the Boro goal. It was taken fair and square from what I could see.

Quite agree Gary - the referee was uniformly useless. There was certainly plenty of baying towards him from our lot so I don't think that it was there was an anti G&N issue going on, but rather a deficiency in his ability in general! Obviously you suffered more from the sending off, but your guy was a bit of a pillock for doing that when on a yellow, especially with that berk in charge.

I was surprised to hear that one of your lot said it sounded like a morgue - you made more noise than a lot of away fans (trust me), although there was some bizarrely enthusiastic cheering for corners and throw-ons which we couldn't quite work out?!

My mate and I did conjecture on whether we were in fact watching a relegation 6 pointer, so poverty stricken was the quality of the first half. However the second half picked up well with you guys on top for about quarter of an hour with us coming back into it after that. Also I saw Burton on the box last night and realised that perhaps neither of us are as bad as I was thinking at about 3:45 yesterday afternoon!

Overall a better way of spending a bank holiday afternoon than in front of the box. All the very best for the remainder of the season.

Hear! Hear! And Liam really must learn not to mess with referees, however unjust they are. Giving Mr Harris a mouthful and then kicking the ball away was only ever going to lead to one conclusion. Once again(a la Yeovil) points slip away when we are reduced to ten men and a suspension looms in the fuiture. Not a smart way to behave and a lesson to be learned by young Mr Hatch who has shown so much promise this season.

Why no postings from John M today? Perhaps they took away his PC when he was ejected. Come on chaps, we re playing with the big boys now - grow up, less of this infantile behaviour.

The cheering wasn't so much for the throw ins and corners, as much as that Mr. Harris had got something right.

He blew for the start of each half OK. After that he just went downhill.

Please tell me that he is the worse referee in the conference.

I totally agree, the referree was just as bad for both sides, he did his upmost to ruin what had been a great day out at a very nice stadium. The Stevenage fans were very welcoming in the bar before the game.

It's a shame we had to have a GNFC fan evicted from the ground for jumping onto the pitch, well done to the GNFC stewards who were quickly on the scene.

First time I,ve ever seen a Fleet Fan escorted from the ground and also the list time I hope, getting upset and carping on about the officials is below us and will win us no freinds or favour, anyone who knows anything about football would know he was an [****!!****] to both sides.

There is very little we can or our opponents can do about it but it does ruin and despoil our recreation when we get a bad un. Thats life.....

The lads on the pitch are still finding their feet in this company and they have got to compose thenselves on and of the ball and on and off the pitch if we are to compete. It pains me to say it but if Liam got two yello0ws for dissent....Well I know what I would do if I was the Gaffer.

So what are you saying? That because we are 'playing with the big boys', we have to just accept the dodgy decisions?

Perhaps the powers that be should actually make sure that the officials are up to the job, because Mr. Harris ( ) certainly isn't.

As for John M, why the need to name and shame?

At least we know who he is, unlike you - hiding behind a silly name...

The ref lost his way early in the game (shame it wasn't on the way to the ground we might have seen a few more goals) and then tried to make up for it by over officiating to the point where he looked uneasy and made it all the much more worse for himself! I wonder if he'll learn from it! I'm not sure whether it was both teams style of play that cancelled out any real football, the ball seemed to spend a lot of time off the pitch; or whether the players performance was dragged down by some over zealous, inconsistent and at times alarming tendancies that could easily be mistaken as a lack of impartiality. What about the booking he made with his back to the incident; I didn't see him consult the linesman! The drop ball decision was memorable; especially as he blew his whistle prior to it as the ball fired just over the crossbar. I wonder what he would have done if it had gone in... Despite all his egotistic posturings, his pacing out for that free kick on the edge of the penalty area was typical of his afternoon: Counted 10, accepted 7 and was on his way back to the other half as the kick was taken. Mr Harris, your performance was sadly lacking today. Just as the players of both teams should reflect on their own performances in some areas today, you should take a good look at the 'standard of contribution' you forced onto a game that held much promise before kick off.

However, let's not forget we missed a few chances again and put the defence under needless pressure by giving the ball away too often up front. Despite Lew Watts putting in an inspiring performance there was always an inevitable feel that one would slip through even though Stevenage seemed as sterile upfront.

On a more serious note: We couldn't find any pubs near the ground. Perhaps we should have stopped off in St Albans or Baldock! Where do all those dual carriageways and roundabouts lead to then?

Don't be stupid, of course you do, nothing's changed the referee is in charge regardless of his level of competence. It's got nothing to do with playing with the big boys, it's just a fact of footballing life.

Agreed, but "invading the pitch" isn't going to help achieve that.

Because what he did was wrong and it was stupid, and does absolutely nothing for the reputation of the Club. At the moment, the Club is held in quite high esteem in non-league football, not only for our acheivements on the field, but also for the way the club conducts itself, and crass stupidly like that will soon remove that goodwill.

Brian & Andy have worked hard to get us this reputation and it this that enables Andy to get players to come to play for us and to keep players in the face of far better financial packages at other clubs.

It's time for some of our fans to grow up and touch and remember that whatever they do, be it at matches or on this and other websites, they are representing the club to the outside world and so have a duty to conduct themselves accordingly.

Please note that I am not hiding behind a silly name.

To call it a pitch 'invasion' is a bit over the top. He (eventualy) jumped over the barrier, then just stood against the hoardings shouting. No attempt was made to get onto the pitch itself and there was never any threat of violence.

Speaking to the players in the bar, they seemed more aggrieved that the Ref spent the game constantly admiring Segere's football with comment's like 'nice play' and 'lovely touch'!

Is this commonplace for a Ref to commentate on the game as he refs, or is this just another example of Mr Harris's ineptness?

Agreed - but I think you realise the person in question knows it was wrong - and it was totally out of character.

It seems you are having a pop at me somewhere in there - I thought I had calmed down somewhat compared to previous seasons?

As for hiding behind silly names - The Looney Left? Unregistered and passing comments without any retribution - at least you know who I am (whether it's a good thing or a bad thing! )

Anyway enough of all this & onto a home win on Saturday.

I'm not about to fall out with either you or John over this...... BUT It was a dumb thing to do, there are new supporters with us who may or may not have reacted by going on as well. I know better than most that it was out of character, but it shouldn't be defended.

I notice that nobody has congratulated Bob G. for being quick off the mark and defusing the incident the right way. He looked totally sick afterwards and shouldn't have had to do it.

Its happened...... it was the result of rank bad officials, and maybe its coloured our judgement. I personally havent been so angry at a game for a long time. Lets put it behind us now and concentrate on getting it right on and off the pitch. I wouldn't like the "sadder" element of the stevenage supporters to be right in calling us a bunch of losers.

Not being at the Stevenage game i cant comment .

However there seems to be a national trend to blame the refs .

Coming back from Saints v Chelsea on Wednesday night I listened to 606 on Radio 5 . Almost every call was about the relevant ref .

Over the last few seasons at the Fleet we have enjoyed our football and results have meant we have never had to resort to this in a major way .In a tighter scenario , this season , lets hope we dont start .

With our enjoyment , our expectations have also risen and therefore a scapegoat seems to be required for our failures . I agree with Gary , from what I've seen a striker would help , but again every clubs supporters say that !

Finally come back John M . Having known you a while whatever you did I'm sure you're forgiven .

Having been around for years you're bound to be passionate about the club .

I feel really sorry for the guy who climbed over the barrier. It is obvious he is one of the old school and the club would be far worse off without him. He seemed to come to his senses as soon as he had actually managed to negotiate the wall (which seemed to take about half an hour). By then it was too late ofcourse. I say let bygones be bygones and if the club were even thinking about banning him I wouldp lead with them not to. A couple more pints beforehand and I may well have beaten him to it! I'm not condoning it, just feel that sometimes reactions are over the top.
