Where does the word Chav originate? And what are the modern conotations of it?

 

All stems from a discusion in my office the other day. One member of the office said where it originally came from and then I said what it more commenly meant. When he found the info what confirmed he was correct he acted like a child and said something about inbreads in Gravesend, as if Chatham (where he comes from) doesn't have any inbreads. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
