A 16-year-old Australian rugby league player has been banned for 30 years for assaulting a touch judge.

Berala Bears lock Bilal El Zamtar, who had hoped to become a professional player, will not be allowed to play again until 31 December 2035.

The suspension was handed out by a Canterbury Junior League judiciary panel, who are expected to recommend a worldwide ban for the teenager.

He could yet face police charges for his actions.

Paul Tycehurst, head of the Canterbury Junior League, said: "The lengthy suspension shows that any abuse of referees or touch judges is something that will simply not be tolerated.

"The message is clear - any such behaviour in the future will ensure a similar ban."
