Robbie Keane

Recommended Posts

Shame he's put in a transfer request, but I guess you can't blame him - I reckon he's had the roughest deal of the four strikers at Spurs.

I reckon that he's the best striker we've got (with the possible exception of the largely unknown quantity that is Mido) - Defoe certainly has not done a great deal since Christmas, and if Chelsea are willing to pay a reasonable amount of cash for him £12-15m, then I'd rather see us sell him, and pull out the stops to keep Robbie.

Still, Keane is a stubborn twat and I reckon he's mind's made up already - Everton being the most likely destination, or possibly Celtic depending on the Bellamy situation.

This'll seal it...

Robbie Keane's future at Tottenham is in doubt after Spurs confirmed he had been hit with a £10,000 club fine and made to train with the reserves.

Keane was carpeted by boss Martin Jol for his reaction at not being brought on as a substitute against Birmingham.

A Spurs' spokesman told BBC Sport: "We can confirm Robbie was fined, but have no further comment to make."

Keane, 24, has struggled to hold a starting place since the arrivals of Jermain Defoe and Egypt's Mido.

The Irish international has been linked with a move to Premiership rivals Everton.

Keane was signed from Leeds for £7m in August 2002 and made a big impact at White Hart Lane.

But he has been forced to play second fiddle to England striker Defoe, while the capture of Mido and the return to full fitness of Frederic Kanoute has stiffened competition for places at White Hart Lane.

Spurs boss Jol took action after Keane showed dissent towards him as he stormed down the tunnel at Birmingham.

Having flounced down the tunnel at Birmingham City after being overlooked as a second-half substitute in favour of Mido at the weekend, it seems that Robbie Keane could be due for yet another move come the end of the season. The response to Keane’s tantrum from manager Martin Jol was not that of a man who seemed unduly concerned at the possible loss of the Irish striker, having said, "It's not about him, it's about the club”. Fair enough, although you doubt whether he would be quite so blasé were he discussing Jermain Defoe or Ledley King.

So, it seems that Keane will either have to bide his time at White Hart Lane or look for club number six in his relatively short career. Staying put would seem unlikely, given that he has already left both Inter Milan and Leeds United after failing to secure regular starting roles. True, he was more or less forced out by Leeds as their cash crisis became evident, but he was already unhappy at being well down the pecking order of the then manager, Terry Venables.

Somewhat ironically, Keane’s St Andrews strop came at the same time as David O’Leary was apparently being told that he would have a transfer kitty of somewhere in the region of £20 million this summer. This money, coupled with Aston Villa being short of firepower, the two having previously been together at Elland Road and the obvious Irish connection, would surely put Villa in pole position were Keane’s frustration to lead to a move.

Should he start next season in a Tottenham shirt, it will be the longest time Keane has spent at any one club in his career to date. He could certainly do with some stability from a career perspective although, from a financial viewpoint, having already been involved in transfers totalling some £38 million, the 24-year old Dubliner must have trousered a fair wedge in signing-on fees down the years.

Despite having only recently stated that he accepted the competition for places with Defoe, Mido and Frederic Kanoute, Keane’s actions on Saturday were not those of a man who is content to be out of the starting XI. For all his talk of the club needing a big squad to get into Europe, it seems that Keane isn’t prepared to be the one left on the bench. There is also the possibility that Jol has other ideas himself and could be willing to sacrifice Keane to bring in another forward over the summer. The one likelihood is that should Keane fail to secure a regular starting role over the remaining seven games this term, his future would appear to lie away from White Hart Lane.
