Billericay Vs Yeading............(The Big Match)

Tense game, I don't think either side will feel they produced their best. We ha the better chances, particularly second half, but Yeading probably had the edge first half.

Excellent crowd, over 1200.

We were hindered by having 2 substitutions forced on us - a clearly not fully fit Paul Gothard had to start the game as Mel was delayed in getting to the ground - and Danny Kerrigan had to be taken off after an accidental collision with one of their players.

Team

Gothard (Capleton), Henty, Macca, Saps, Kerrigan (Trott), Game, Hunter, Forbes (Oxby), Dormer, Armstrong, Elder.

I think both teams will probably be reasonably happy with a point although perhaps Yeading slightly more so than ourselves

The first half was tense and nervous. It looked like everyone on the pitch was scared to make a mistake and as a result there was few chances.

Unfortunately a bit of errant defending gave Yeading the chance to take the lead and once again DJ proved he knows where the target is. However I thought that after that we really bossed the game and thoroughly deserved our equaliser. As the half went on we got stronger and stronger but sadly couldnt take more than one of the numerous second half chances we had. Yeading always looked dangerous on the break and were clearly a cut above the "average" Ryman league oppo but i still felt if any team as unlucky not to take all the points it was us.

It's still all to play for and Yeading have another tough away game to come at Leyton on Tuesday. Can they afford to settle for another point? Who knows?

Fair assessments from jl and simon there i think. Yeading probably shaded the first half, and i dont think we produced anywhere near our best football. Armstrong made himself an excellent opportunity, muscling through the defence then firing a shot which was saved, and then scuffing the rebound wide. He did all the hard work but couldnt quite finish it off. I thought Paul was excellent thia afternoon.

Second half we were the better team. They hit us on the counter after a scramble in their box which we easily could have scored from.

It then got a bit heated resulted in a mass brawl on the field involving almost every player on the pitch, as well as a number of players not on the pitch and some managers and coaches too. Very unseemly, there were more than a few expletives leaving my mouth at this point.

We got a thoroughly deserved equaliser after an error by their 4 (snoop!) Dormer firing home a good finish. We had a number of chances, none of which could be turned into goals, or really testing the keeper. Having said that Mel wasnt significantly troubled thereafter nnd we finished the better team.

I think 1-1 a fair result, although we were probably just the better side over the whole game.

Crowd an excellent 1200 odd, and there was singing and chanting the whole afternoon. Top notch stuff.

Im fairly happy with a point, especially after such a tense game, it leaves us 3 points to make up in 6 games, easily do-able, although we do have to rely on other teams doing us a favour. All we can do is concentrate on our results, and getting as many points as possible from 18, and seeing if its enough.

totally agree with jl and cardiff's view of the match today. thought yeading were strong physically and quick up front, especially on the break. kerrigan and mcsweeney will be a bit disappointed with their defending for the opener, it was a bouncing ball which wouldn't come down quick enough and dj nipped in. other than that most of the chances, if not all, in the 2nd half were billericay's.

I wouldn't be surprised if we were watching the TWO promoted teams today. not sure who will be automatic and who will need the play-offs. yes they're a lottery but the others in the hunt don't look all that at the moment, especially borgies lot.

I was pleased with the performance today, first half was pretty even, but second half we were more creative, dominated possession, and on another day would have scored 1 or 2 more.

1-1 was a fair result, DJ is always a danger, and seized his opportunity.

If we continue to perform at our current standard, stay relaxed, and enjoy our football we could be promoted as champions.

What a great support today.

by the way where was gazza today?

Gazza was at his Father's memorial at the Emanual Church from 2 to 2.45. I made the game but Neil stood in for the announcements. I'll be back next week.

BTW the music was still my choice. As we have a new bit of gear to add to our PA system, I will be able to take requests during the pre game period...We shall also be looking to have the announcements and music wired into the clubhouse at some point. I can't promise by next week or this season because there is some technical bits and bobs that need to be sorted but....Ya know me, it will be done!!!

Oh and with the requests, if I have the song I will play it...If I don't I'll play it at the next home game, so get thinking and requesting!!!

Overall, I believe we just shaded it and deserved the full 3 points. They're a big team and physical with it. You can understand the reason they are where they are, they just batter the opposition into submission with their physical presence, football coming in a poor 2nd!!!

Gotta say, what a nob their manager is!!! Started a 22 man brawl over a throw in!!! Twat!!! And then the ref bottle's it when it comes to showing a red!!! I was also surprised at the amount of "hand ball's" the ref allowed. Obviously an ex rugby man!!!

No, the lads did us proud today and as TC said, we'll keep going our way, quietly enjoying our football and our teams improving performances whilst everyone else look at Yeading, Eastleigh and Boretree!!! No need to point out that the NLP thinks we don't exist...Let 'em put others under the spotlight, we'll have our glory without that pressure!!!

Well done to the lads and everyone that was there. Top performance, top crowd...The Blues go marching on!!!

I disagree. The currency of strikers is goals. I would bring back Cousins to play alongside Nathan next week. Having said that you could easily make a case for playing Paul wide right almost as a third striker with him and Cuz able to interchange. On the subject of strikers it was great to see Hockers out there kicking a ball again in the pre match warm up. Looks like his recovery is still going well.

Come on you bluessss

Sorry, jl I agree the currency of strikers is goals but to a degree the supporters ask for the impossible sometimes...like someone moaning up for him to release tha ball quickly when he had just got it and was surrounded by 3 Yeading defenders...there has to be a reality check somewhere.

Coming back to the announcements, I would like to thank Neil Wiltshire for stepping in yesterday when I wasn't available. Cheers.

I just think that Paul armstrong is a good player and although he isn't scoring goals at the moment, supporters have to be patient. we were with Cuz and we were with Nathan...Some people forget that it doesn't happen all the time and that effort should be praised as well, if the result of the effort isn't the deired one.

Again, Paul showed agression which opened up other avenues for other players to exploit...it's a team game!!!

Agree with Gazza, and stand by my assessment of Paul, Cuz isnt exactly a goal machine at the moment, and i think Paul has been consistently performing well, and creates more when hes out there. He tends to drop deep a little bit, so as a consequence hes less likely to be in the goalscoring positions.

Agree about the physicality of the Yeading side, they certainly base much of there performance on outmuscling and outpacing their opponents rather than using skill. Fair play though, it works for them. Far too many sneaky nudges in the back which the ref failed to penalise though.

And yes, Drax is a twat.

I am not disputing that Paul is a good player, I am just saying the facts suggest that Cousins is more likely to get us a goal.

Hockton 14 starts 14 goals 1.0 start per goal

Elder 15 starts 14 goals 1.07 starts per goal

Cousins 34 starts (some as winger) 13 goals 2.62 starts per goal

Armstrong 9 starts 2 goals 4.5 starts per goal

Wareham 18 starts 4 goals 4.5 starts per goal

However looking at Ricay's results based on each players last 6 starts you get this

Armstrongs last 6 starts: w 4 d 2 l 0

Elder w 4 d 2 l 0

Hockton w 4 d 2 l 0

Cousins w 4 d 1 l 1

Wareham w 1 d 1 l 4

As I said above I think you can make a good case for playing all three of them, perhaps my point is more based on Cuz not being picked rather than Armstrong being picked.

I think its a case of 4 players but only 2 positions (I only want to see 3 up front if we need a goal), therefore 2 have to miss out. You can't drop Elder at the moment and the Cousins and Armstrong combo doesn't work, their too similar players and just don't look like producing goals between them. Therefore you have 3 players fighting for 1 position. I think Wareham is best on the bench at the moment, bring him on for the last 30 mins to add a bit of urgency to the proceedings. After the second 45 v Wealdstone and the 60+ mins v Chelmsford you can't split the Armstrong/Elder combo. So I'm afraid Cousins has to sit on the bench and take his chance when he gets it so he can't be dropped.

I think Yeading came not to lose and didn't, they were a solid team at the back (although there number 6 was a bit ropey) and fast up front who could catch us on the break. I don't think we did enough to say we deserved to win, if the roles had been reversed we would of been saying we deserved a point because we defended well, the game was more a battle and we only gave them a few chances. Going back to the who plays up front question, Elder's strength is in the air and I can only remember him getting one header which just went over and Armstrong put himself about.
