28/03/05 Middlesex Senior County Cup-Yeading

BEAVERS LOSE (OR DID THEY?)

Hampton & Richmond Borough 1 Yeading 2

Inns,51 Att; 563 Haule,2 & 86

Middlesex Senior Cup Final Monday 28th March

Hampton`s fourth attempt to win the Middlesex Senior Cup ended in failure or did it? The game which is supposed to be the showpiece of the Middlesex Football Association started with protests relating to eligibility of players and ended with officials of the Middlesex FA locked in a meeting after the trophies and medals had been handed out, trying to resolve the situation.

Before the exchange of team sheets Hampton`s Manager Alan Devonshire pointed out, quite reasonably but firmly, that neither Yeading`s keeper Ross Flitney or right back Steve Wales were eligible as both had been registered by Yeading AFTER the date of their semi-final. Hampton, themselves had excluded hat trick hero Richard Pacquette from their cup final squad for the self same reason, as he had only been recently signed. In fact Mr Devonshire was threatened, by a County Official, with being ejected from the ground if he carried on with his protest. Hampton were informed that, allegedly, Yeading had a goalkeeping crisis and Flitney, had been signed from Fulham only a few days previously but the County FA had given special dispensation for Yeading to play him (Hampton had not been advised of this fact, a courtesy surely). Yeading maintained that Wales was eligible but it would appear, after contacting the Ryman League Registration Office, that this was not so and he had been signed after the semi final. It remains to be seen how this crisis is resolved. Will the FA order a replay or will Yeading be stripped of the Trophy and Hampton instated as winners. If an ineligible player appears in an earlier round the guilty club would be disqualified.

As to the game itself, the match was pretty evenly contested. Yeading had not beaten Hampton in the League this season so they were no doubt keen to get a result this time round. Hampton, perhaps had slightly more of the game but Yeading proved more adept at taking their chances. Yeading got off to the perfect start.Davis Haule gave Yeading the lead in the 2nd minute, Alan Inns equalised in the 51st minute from a Ryan Ashe corner before Haule scored the `winner` in the 86th minute with a header from a corner.

The Middlesex FA did not cover themselves with glory on Monday night, a high ranking official swore at two supporters (both comfortably middle-aged and respectable) when they raised the issue during the game. Not a very good example to set when the talk at the moment is all about removing abusive language from the game!

Team line-up;-

Kieron Drake; Graham Harper, Dean Wells, Craig Lewington (Dudley Gardner, 87), Matt Elverson, Orlando Jeffrey, Alan Inns, Elliott Godfrey, Luke Fontana, Ryan Ashe, Obinna Ulasi (Andy Morley,87).

Subs not used ; Steve Omonua, Tom Crossland & Abdul Saee-Osman.
