An eventful game in which we could have got more, but equally so could have Marlow.

 

Winston grabbed a brace and Daly chipped in with the opener for Slough.

Thought starting team looked good as a unit and played well, looking quite balanced (as opposed to most of last season). Winston was everywhere and took his goals superbly, Hale did well especially as the target man for the goal kicks (DJZ looked pretty good today except for one moment of madness when Daly cleared off the line). All in all not a bad start to the season, 7 points out of nine (some would say we should have full points. Having now jsut written the report and reflecting on that, I feel overall it was a disappointing performance. Caught out from quick thinking and sloppy defending for those two goals, and we didn't take anywhere near half our chances.

 

Will be an interesting one on Monday against table topping Northwood, but considering we got Hale, M**denhead got half their squad, will they be a force?

Agree with Gary on both counts , should have had more and sloppy defending . Needs to be sorted now as when the winter comes and heavy pitches it'll cost us .

I was only dissapointed that we didnt put away more of our chances but at least be created so many of them? Winston and Hale upfront is a winning partnership and i hope thay stay together and start. Some people hate to admit it but Gilkes has played really well in these openers he looks a class act I wonder where CJ is going to fit in? I do agree that some of the defending was sloppy and maybe another really solid centre back to work with steve would make things stronger but maybe when howard comes back he may fit that role. Centre back - Howard in place of Ricky Browne, possibly although he plays a lot better at right full back.

 

I think Gilkes will move into central midfield just behind the front two with Wilko/Metcalfe/Hakki (2 of 3) operating as the ball winners in midfield. This would leave CJ to cause havoc on the left wing.

 

Still, so far so good, and Zepherin has looked quite good so far!

At the moment the only change I would make would be to bring in Howard for Browne. Maybe play Howard at right back and Palmer in the centre depending on who is the best at getting forward down the wing. I don't believe that Wilko or CJ coming in will strengthen the team at present. The good thing is that we do have cover on the left side this season (Reed, Gilkes, Barras, CJ) all of whom can play left midfield and three of whom (not CJ) can play left back. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/bounceblue.gif" alt="" />

I would say that we have had a consistently full compliment down the left - the right side has been the problem area. We have only had Howard to burst down the right.. we have been without an out and out right winger with good crossing ability for quite a while..

But, from what I hear - not having seen any games yet - the team seems to be much more balanced and committed. Only three games played I know and it's too early to tell but with players of the class of Gilkes and Winston going forward, with Hakki, Barras and other experienced and skilful players, we have the ability (and now maybe the desire of the younger imports).. like someone said after the division was announced, if we don't get promotion from this League this season, we never will. We have nothing to fear from any team.
