errrrrrrrrrr ...... harry could you explain that a bit cearler for me please

Sure, what I meant was that the guy was saying what he felt. You was saying he was wrong for saying it because it hurt other peoples feelings. Well some people would say that you can't say that he is wrong because it is wrong for you to do so. Please understand what I'm saying and don't go all FleetBabe on me.

Now was that Irony or humour? Ah FF will know.

If I'm walking after dark in Gravesend & group of Indian, Eastern European or black (highly unlikely I know) youths are walking towards me I only become moderately more alert than usual. But if they're baseball hat wearing little white pikies, I have my keys clenched in my hand ready in case something kicks off.

Just going back to this point if I may.

When you say ‘Pikies’ presumably you are referring to gypsies? and presumably you would be equally as apprehensive if approached by a group of baseball hat wearing little Asian/black chavs?

The origin of the name 'Gypsy', is Egypt. The country of origin that the original travellers said they came from.

However, DNA testing of 'Romany' gypsies, recognised as the only 'true gypsies', has their origins as the boarder area of southern Afghanistan and northern Pakistan.

'Pikeys' or 'Tinkers', are of Irish origin, possibly inter-bred with gypsies.

'Chavs', are not and have never been exclusivly of gypsy or pikey origin. 'Chavs' are a bastardisation of the 80's 'casuals' that use to, and in some cases still frequent the football terraces of this nation, hence the predeliction for name brand clothing.

Anyway back to the "Orange Jacketted Stormtroopers" ......

We all know that we need these guys at the games and the necessary nature of their presence.

Its just the attitude of some of them and their personas that both amuse and at the same time infuriate the Fleet Regulars (especially the guy with short cropped hair, black bomber jacket and headpiece).

They need to just "chill" a bit and carry out their roles in a far more relaxed and laid back way and then if an incident occurs spring into action like a herd of startled gazzels.

A lot of Stewards are tarnished by the image of "Little Hitler's" or Jobsworths who love a bit of self importance. Frankly I wouldn't know what the Stewards are like at the Fleet as I have not been enough, but being a local affair I would have thought that there would be a decent relationship between fans and stewards (presuming that the stewards are Fleet Fans who work voluntarily ?). If so fair play to them.

Regarding escape routes its hardly a packed house ?

I mis-used the word Pikey. Should have been chav, oik, skanky ...etc. (Congrats to Red Neck for his bit on the origins of true Gypsies. That would tie in with the fact that the Romany language has its origins in Sanskrit which developed into Persian, which is spoken in Iran & Afghanistan, & the languages of the Indian continent.)

In Gravesend, I'd be surprised to see a a group of Asian or black chavs (although to be honest I have seen the odd Indian face amongst the King's Farm mob). At the moment we pale faces have a bit of a monopoly on the chav "culture." So in Gravesend, I am more ready for fight or flight if a group of white youths is around yes, definitely. However, where I work, I'd be in the same state of readiness for any group - but the black kids wouldn't be chavs; they'd be trying to ape some pathetic would be gangsta of an elder brother who was banged up in Feltham & the local hero.

The whole point is, race doesn't pre-dispose people towards criminal or anti- social behaviour, but certain types of behaviour are favoured by criminal & anti-social elements within particular social & racial groups. So white, poorly parented kids tend to be what we'd call chavs, while their black couterparts like to think their big men in "real" gangs.

What are we doing talking about this anyway? You can tell our season has suddenly gone empty!

Speaking of racism, I need some advice.

Was taking my elderly grandmother out for a Sunday pub meal a few weeks back and whilst I was parking my car a black gentlemen not watching where I he was going almost crashed his vehicle into mine. I sounded my horn to alert him of my presence, he took umbrage to this and we began remonstrating and gesturing to one another. Well, luckily the situation died down but afterwards my grandmother said “You want to watch them darkie’s, he probably practices witchcraft or black magic, I’ve heard that some of them are cannibals and he could make a voodoo doll of you”. In all fairness it was quite funny, but what should I do? Raise the subject that nowadays some people frown upon racism or let her get away with it?

Difficult one. I often tell the odd joke that could be seen as racist, but only to people I know wouldn't find it offensive. Meanwhil saying that if I heard the same joke on the train I would probably find it offensive myself on behalf of anyone else that may have been on the train that found it offensive.

It's all about what we can get away with, did what your grandmother say offend you? If not keep quiet.

Whilst accepting that there is an undesirable element in Gravesend, just as there is no doubt in Rochester, and many other towns and cities in the UK,it is generally a minority element.

We, however, only help accentuate the problem - its been a common thing for many years now that "going out after dark is dangerous", when incidents are few and far between. The fact that people believe that its dangerous, however, means there are fewer people out at night, creating an environment where a mugging or some such incident is far less likely to be witnessed and far less likely that the mugger would be caught.

TV & Newspapers play up the bad news scenario as well, which also only makes the situation feel worse.
