Stewards

Why is it that every game I go to the Stewards piss me off more and more?

First during the Bishops game we were told not to stand on any part of the yellow painted box in the stand as it is a 'fire exit'. Any time anyone so much as loitered on the yellow box a steward was onto them asking them to move. Shame they can't do this when someone puts their leg over the wall.

In the Canvey game there were a few idiots that decided to cause some trouble. But did this warrant several police cars and wagons turning up at half time?

As for the game today, to segregate 30 away fans like they did is just ridiculous.

And one more thing, when a child has a leg over the wall, surely the stewards can deal with it rather than every 5 minutes the tannoy announcer interrupting the game.

What exactly do these people do?

We were warned about the yellow boxes today and turned it into a joke as it was more interesting than the game - but to call two other stewards round was hillarious. The other week the pot smoking chaps were not even spoke to, yet we stood in a yellow box!! oooooooeeeeeerrrrrr

If they shout at you for going into the yellow box, why not try not going into the yellow box.

Obviously it did, things could easily have gotten nasty against Canvey but if you think the Stewards are inadequate then surely they should have called for back up

Good point there was no need to segregate today. The only thing I can think of is perhaps it was on police recomendation that the game was segregated. If there has been trouble at a previous game then the police will order for all games for the remainder of the season to be segregated.

Interruping the game? You what, I have never seen the play stop while the stadium announcer tells the child to pull his/her legs back from over the wall. I believe a Steward has been given a part of the ground to look after and it is his/her job to do so, if the child is near enough for the steward to reach without leaving his/her area then they will tell the child to pull their legs back from over the wall, I have seen this happen a number of times.

If the stadium announcer can see someone with their legs over the wall is it not better to announce it let the world know then have the child never do it again due to embarrasment? No no lets have the Stewards tell each other what to do on their radios and have them all moved out of position.

A very difficult job, and most of the time very well.

I hope that answers your queries, mods and admins you can now close this thread.

Well, they can't segregate Morecambe can they?. thats been a quality unsegregated game since we got promoted, always a great friendly atmosphere with the singing battle between both fans. This is probably the game I am most looking forawrd to out of the rest and I will be bitterly dissapointed if its segregated!

Is it on police advice to segregate all of the other home games this season?

It's a stupid decision. There's worse than what happened at the Canvey game going on at other grounds all over the country week in week out. So now because of the actions of two or three Canvey supporters we have to go and do a stupid thing like this.

It certainly wasn't two or three Canvey fans that caused the trouble last week it was a bunch of Northfleet ratboys who caused the problems.

Since neither the club or the police knew whether the scumbags were going to turn up today the match had to be segregated, its unfortunate for the Forest Green fans, who have never caused any trouble at Stonebridge road, that they should be segregated due to the actions of a bunch of our own chavs who probably weren't even at the match today. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

"As stated in todays programme" - thats nice to know, because arriving 15 minutes before kick off,I couldnt get a programme again.

I'll bet there were plenty left at the FGR end, though.

And,yes,I know you can go to the club office to get one, but I really cant be asked to walk all the way round there just to get a programme, especially now you cant walk through the terracing at the Northfleet end.

How many other people would have got a programme today had they been available? If there is a supply left over at the end,its £2.50 per programme that the club are simply throwing away - 40 programmes and thats obviously £100. We're not made of money, and surely the club should plan this better especally given the attendance wasnt more than one could really have expected.

Not quite true Alan, the police advise, but if the advise segregation and we ignore their advice then they will send down a couple of van loads of constables and send us the bill. So in fact, they make the decision.

The club has stated EVERY match will be segragated for the rest of the season.

Over the top action based on the Canvey match.

I'm going to criticise the stewards again here. In the first half, a Fleet regular, arriving late, found the home turnstiles already closed. By comparison, the away entrance was still manned (obviously either expecting a late rush of Dartford-based Forest Green fans or some of the freeloaders were running late).

So in he comes & opts for the short cut through the segragation area. The stewards stop him and tell him he has to walk all the way round the ground to get to his usual spot. After pointing out that from where he was now standing that it was the same distance to either section of support, he opted to tell the steward to get lost and walk into the Fleet area. Frantic radio calls ensued & a rollicking from one steward to the other two.

Excuse me? Was he trying to pick a fight with the travelling supporters? No. Part of a stewards job, if a fan has to enter via the wrong entrance, IS TO ESCORT THE SAID FAN TO THE APPROPRIATE PART OF THE GROUND, as is done at other clubs. Sort it out because the stewarding of our games is fast turning into a farce. We seem to have people more worried about people standing in the wrong place than they do about the fact that the club loses money every week from a bunch of freeloaders who get let in via the away supporters end for nothing.

I wonder how much revenue the club is losing in this manner? I wonder how much the club got charged for calling in the police against Canvey, when they really weren't required?

As Health & Safety is part of my business, any fan standing in the Yellow Box should be asked to move, it has and i am sure would have been agreed by the local Fire Officer and Health & Safety Executive.

Fire Exit's are very important and all Health & Safety issues should be obeyed by the Club, and then passed on to Stewards to act on behalf of the Club.

If the Stewards in question are abusive or heavy handed that should be reported to the Club, as happened at Gills game with Ipswich recently.

You arrived at just the wrong time Alan. Courtesy of the extra long queue at the season ticket turnstile, because of the free children offer, I didn't get inside until 2.50. Kenny's hut was empty, but I bumped into him as I walked behind the main stand, returning with an accomplice (both running) & both carrying programmes they'd collected from the away end.

Obviously it would be better if there was a notice announcing that programmes were being fetched when this happens.

Graham S

PS Let's not get too despondent about yesterday, chaps. FG came for a draw & played 5 across midfield & one (heroic) forward. If they were interested in nicking a goal it was only just in case we got one. A draw was the extent of their ambitions.

Yes, we should have had the nous & guile to break them down. We didn't. Liam's still learning. If he's going to become a successful manager, he will have learnt from yesterday. Brian appointed him because of his single minded resolve, which everyone who knew him as a player talks of, not because of extensive managerial experience.

Personally, I think he's done ok, though I've disagreed with a number of his decisions. Unless we start disastrously next season, I wouldn't even think of making an informed judgement until Christmas.

‘gotten nasty against Canvey’?

How exactly? If two groups of supporters want to fight then they will. Would the three stewards between the segregation have been able to hold stop any kind of scuffle? No chance, they’d probably have run for their lives.

Fact is that the Canvey supporters didn’t want things to get nasty and the Fleet supporters behind the goal were just young chavs – hardly hardened football hooligans, and the reaction they got was more than they actions warranted.

If supporters want to fight they will. In pubs, train stations or car parks. They didn’t fight because they had no interest in anything other than winding each other up.

Complete overreaction from the stewards who handled the situation appallingly.

GNFC don’t have a hooligan problem so don’t try and tarnish our club with one eh?
