Newport waste opportunity

1-0 up against Hayes, they draw 1-1. A winnable home game wasted. We were never going to beat Grays, but Monday is different. Cambridge are nowhere near as good.

Dont you believe it. They are obviously not in the same class as Grays but they are far and away clear second best. Their away form is tremendous though at home the tend to drop silly points. We have played better at home lately whilst Cambridge are going through a sticky patch and this could be the one thing we have going for us really. This will be as hard as it was today believe me and if ever we need a crowd there to cheer the team on then its on Monday. It may be just as daunting as todays game but there is a chance on monday that we can get a point at least. Even if we drop all three points the remainig fixtures of ours and of those around us should still allow us to stay up. We have to target every game I know but its those especially against our rivals near the bottom that will prove our survival or undoing. If we get a point at home on Monday then I will be well satisfied but three will go so much further in our fight for survival. Gonna be a cracker on Monday so get all your friends and family there. We must all try and turn out in abundance to cheer the team on.

Wholeheartedly agree TONY this becomes a big fixture and what i can gather from the exiles is there will be xtra on Monday. Seems that relations will accompanying them so lets give it some. I understand the hard core sung to the bitter end today. It needs a united front on this something that HAS been there this year. Some ground news would help but guess we will have to wait till Wednesday for that. Also Tony see what you can find about the ground before then. Have you got KP's number. I have but i wont divulge it on the net. I often ring him up and he is always extremely polite and helpful but do not wish to overkill. We do have a days rest on Cambridge but whether that will make a dif we'll see.

Geoff,I try not to get too involved with the clubs running of things even though I speak my mind. I would call him but I dont have his number. Besides when I spoke to him last week all he said was that there was something concerning the actual pitch to sort out, though this would take very little time to do and that we should expect a start on the ground before the end of the month. Whilst I am getting impatient I have to accept his word as gospel and that these things will come about in the timescale he mentions. So best to leave things till Monday perhaps and maybe have a word with him again then should nothing have been commenced by then.Like others say maybe after Monday things will really get going.

Cookie, Geoff, did you go to the game at Cambridge? Did you see how bad Eastbourne were at Homelands? Do you not remember that we have beaten Thurrock (another play-off contender) THREE times this season? The fact is Grays are in a league of their own, everyone else is mediocre.

Did you not write that?

It was actually a very good, entertaining day out. I know that sounds a bit peculiar, but it was warm, sunny, we were made to feel very welcome, the ground has certainly improved, and we sang all the way through.

As far as our performance went, we actually played very well, considering I think we all knew in our hearts that the result would have turned out like this. There were times during the game when we played some real attractive passing football. Watson powered one into the net, but it was ruled offside I think. He stayed on for the whole game, but I think his hamstring was troubling him at the end.

The team:

Trego

Charalambous, Smith, Keister, Edwards

Oates, Clarke, Benvenides

Stadhart, Baptiste, Watson

Barnett came on for Bill, Gradley for Oates. Oates looked a bit crook when he went off, same injury recurring I think

Gradley looked very sharp, stringing some wonderful passes through midfield. Welcome back, Pat. Clarkey was outstanding, running everywhere and working like a maniac. Keister and Ross solid at the back, although John was a tad red mist today, which caused us some worry as we do not need him sent off. Rocky was passing well, and very good with his head, and nearly found the net with a beautiful shot. Watson gave it everything too and came close on a couple of occasions. He was running around like a fury for most of the game but was I think knackered at the end, as indeed was Che, up to his normal work rate. Alexis worked very very hard and showed a lot of passion and commitment, albeit inaccurate with his passing at times. Peter B was as quick as usual. We just have to face it that Grays far outclassed us, especially with their pace at the front, and an extremely well schooled defence. I have to say that I thought their goalie was very good value for money, despite all our niggling at him kept his sense of humour to the end.

The lads were not happy at the end, heads down and all that, and you can understand why, so I am glad that a few of us stayed and applauded them until they left the field. I think the Grays fans thought we must be a bit peculiar for doing so. They are a quiet lot though so perhaps they are unused to that level of support.

As for Cambridge, I saw them the first time round, we can beat Thurrock we can beat them, but we need to make sure that we give the lads some encouragement to get their tails back up.

Thanks for that June nice one. Heard the support was good but that is 3 games in the league without a goal. We do have two days rest and cambridge will only have one. Monday is crunch game and as you said they can be beaten. I was at Cambridge too and we could have won there.

A very fair assessment of the game, in fact if it was not for an excellent save by the Gray's keeper from Rocky we would have gone one up in the first ten minutes or so. Who knows what difference that might have made?

Thoes supporters who sang, even chanting 5-4 etc when we were four nil down, were marvellous.

Gonna be at the cambridge game on mon. Lets all get behind the players and really give them encouragement. They all need it at this stage of the season and if we all get behind them and make some noise, we've won half the battle in staying up. Give rocky and nej encouragement in particular.Keep the critisising to ourselves when mistakes are made. If our heads are seen to drop and if we start moaning then we are doomed. I think that some questions need to be asked about the ground though. We've got this far and were still within a chance of survival. When we go back to hartsdown the one thing we all want is to stay in conference south.
